New GA-H55m-USB3 system wont complete boot
« on: August 07, 2010, 02:03:25 pm »
Hi
I just picked up and built the following system:

GA H55M-USB3 MB
Intel i3-530 processor Ver E81102-001
Corsair 2Gb DDR3 - 1333Mhz RAM
ThermalMaster PSU 420W ATX12V came in Case recommended by my computer parts supplier here.
Seagate 500Gb SATA
Samsung DVD SH-S223

The issue is this:

I boot system. it comes to the first GByte splash screen for an instant maybe 3-5seconds. if you leave it to run its course it
then goes black screen,
Then quick flash of text something that says supports only Intel.... Hard disk or CDROM ...This will take a few seconds....and its gone before i can read it all
then to text to say Loading operating system then black screen nothing...

If i interupt to say the BIOS settings, *DEL key* it goes there but for an instant again and its gone. back to loading operating system.
If i choose F12 boot same thing its there for an instant managed to be quick enough to tab down to the cdrom and enter before it went after 10th try
it goes to screen boot from CD/DVD which i pressed enter, it actually seems to start an windows install but same thing shows screen for a second and then black

same for any of the other options on start up flash page....

I have tried the RAM in all slots, drives in different sata slots,

Power is set up with the 24 pin (20+4) inserted and the only other 12v 4 pin slot inserted in the ATX 12v 2x4 slot, there is only one plug and it only fits one of the 4 slots. i assume i dont need both since there is only one 4 pin plug from the PSU.

Hope someone has some experience of this to help me i want to have this system set up for a new user at the office on MOnday..

Many thanks

Richard

That's your problem, some computer shop that sold you this ::) You need both sockets filled with 2x4pin plugs for the CPU. The power supply is not suitable for the motherboard.

Really thats stupid! thanks for nothing to them and they could simply have sold me wat i wanted i wasnt worried about price its cost me more than a biger power supply to frig around with this for 2 hours.

Thanks for that

No problem Richard, if you will take my advice I would recommend that you buy a well known make like the Corsair TX range and get one of at least 500W. That will give you a little headroom if you want to upgrade later.

Thanks mate from down under, i will go and buy a PSU Corsair in the morning and not from the same shop! You definitely earned the title Hero!

Ok. well check al the obvious things like the graphics card in tight, all the connections, RAM in right slots. Clear the CMOS and load BIOS optimised defaults. Make sure the heatsink is secure on the CPU(common fault).

Put the memory in slot 1. Not doubting you but double check the heatsink as the problem does sound like an overheating one and these heatsinks have been often known to produce this sort of effect.
To clear CMOS just remove power from pc and then remove the motherboard battery and short out the battery holder contacts for a minute or two.

Ok so i have completely removed the board checked all the mountings for no short to chasis, checked heatsink it had an obvious mark where the pre applied paste had contacted the processor, checked RAM was in the first slot.

Booted and it had same effect 1 second on flash page, second boot, i hit f12 managed to click boot from cd and win xp started to load said checkin hardware config then black for 2 mins or more then blue exp install page with first option showed but too quick for me to see let alone select anything.

i give up for tonite it is bedtime 240am :)

Thanks for your help so far

Richard
oh did the cmos too

For your information you can press the "pause" key at any time to freeze the screen and then just press "enter" to start again. It is handy when things go by too quickly. Anyway we will sort it tomorrow.

Weird, it normally works. Is your keyboard USB? If so maybe that's why.

Well at last found out what it was, not the power supply or the keyboard. It didnt like my desktop monitor, a Syncmaster 940N. Only found out by accident when i checked to see the cable was plugged into MB socket ok and the image that had gone black came back on then disappeared again in 2 seconds. Monitor works fine on three other laptops and desktops just this MB who knows? If i unplug and replug instantly there is an image and in 2 seconds gone. tested 20x .

So got windows installed on it using another LCD monitor and then it seems fine!

Thanks for all your pointers and patience..

Richard
