GA-P55A-UD4 USB 3.0 BSOD
« on: September 21, 2010, 02:41:00 pm »
Hi,

Round Easter 2010 i purchased a GA-P55A-UD4 mobo. Last week i purchased a manhattan usb 3.0 external hdd case and installed a hard drive in it. When i plug the device into a normal usb 2.0 port, everything works fine. When i plugg in the device to one out of the two usb 3.0 ports, the disk seems like going on and off and after several times of doing this, i get a blue screen. I updated to bios f13 but nothing changed. My operating system is original windows 64bit. What is going on? how can i resolve this pleasE?

Yes, obviously, sorry i did not mentioned it. I actually downloaded the latest drivers from gigabytes website. However, if you think that there shoyldn't be a problem with Windows 7 Ultimate and the nec drivers that are posted in the website, i can try once more and let you know. Although i doubt the drivers are working, cause as i said i downloaded and reinstalled them. The only thing i did not do is that i did not uninstall the "older"  drivers first. Could you please point me the location for the correct drivers for usb 3.0 for windows 64 bit? also should i first uinstall then restart and then reinstall the new driver? would this make any difference?

Awaiting your reply, please

If you must use USB 3 go in the BIOS > Integrated Peripherals and set “Turbo SATA3 / USB3.0” to “Turbo USB3.0” F10 to save if that don't work try setting it to “Disabled”.

The drivers are available from here: http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3436&dl=1#driver
Uninstall the old drivers first, reboot and then install the latest drivers that you are just going to download. I do not know if it will make any difference but we have to start somewhere.

Hi again... I downloaded the new driver, restarted my system and installed the driver you indicated. I connected the drive which had the same symptom. The hard drive seem to turn on and off constantly... So no change. Then i tried to set Integrated Peripherals and set “Turbo SATA3 / USB3.0” to “Turbo USB3.0” as you said but is greyed and does not change it only says "Auto". I also Tried diabling legacy support and playing with the settings in case one allowed me to change the "Auto" but was always greyed. I changed the only other available setting somthing about EHCI  and made it XHCI and after i logged in to windows and connected my drive, i got a blue screen.

Help! :-)

You were the second member yesterday to have a problem with an external USB3 enclosure. If you are interested in the other one check it out here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2903.0.html

Hi, i posted this on onemilimeter's thread

Hi, i am the guy that you said i have the different problem also with usb 3, and you gave the link to my thread. To tell you the truth it seems to that
we have the same problem, it is not that different. I also can not see my hard drive on my computer, and also under usb controller it shows the two renesas drivers that you mention. I dont think the problem lies neither with the hard drive nor with the enclosure enclosure or the cable...

I am saying this because i have a different enclosure (Manhattan) and different (i suppose) cable. The only difference in my case is that the hard drive turns on and off all the time (at least the external case's led does) and after doing it for several times, i get a BSOD. As onemillimeter said, the drive works fine when i connect it to a normal usb port.

Thus i conclude, it is either the chip (renesas) or its firmware, that has the problem.... Did you make any progress?

I have already posted this in the other thread.
It does seem to be pointing that way but we really need more cases to confirm that this is indeed the cause.

Dark Mantis (and all of you guys), thank you very much for your support. Do you think we should take it to Gigabyte? I mean, ask for their technical advice as well?

In the mean time if you make any progress, please let me know. I will try and search for a solution today, hope to give you good news.

I think in these situations it is always worth opening a question with GGTS if nothing more than to make them aware of the problem. You will probably have to keep asking though as they will just palm you off with a stock reply otherwise.
Please let us know if you get any response from anywhere.
