GA-X58A-UD3R USB Ports Not Working - 3 Month Old High End Build
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:55:11 pm »
GA-X58A-UD3R, Bios Version FA
i7-930
24GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 Ram, 6 x 4GB total (Model F3-12800CL7T-12GBTDD 2X)
MSI GeForce GTX 480
OS drive 300GB Veliciraptor
5 x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives
Thermaltake W0133RU 1200W PSU
Win 7/64 Pro
Logitech Wireless USB keyboard
Wacom Intuitos 4 USB Tablet/Mouse Combo
--------------------------------------------------------------

Having an odd problem with all USB ports going out on this system I built about 3 months ago.
I've hooked up a PS2 mouse and keybd for now until I figure this out.

When I go to device manager under USB controllers, all ports have exclamations.
If I right click/uninstall each port and then right click again and scan for hardware changes
they will all come back working. When I reboot they all go out again until I repeat
the uninstall/scan for changes procedure.

Ports are listed as: Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3A3A, 3C, 34 - 39
The 2 USB 3.0 ports don't seem to have a problem but I also have nothing in those ports to confirm that they work or not.

During bootup, the USB ports seem to be working because I can get into bios with my wireless keyboard
and my USB flash drive blinks. Once I get out of Bios the ports are not working.
This is verified on a reboot by hitting the F8 key to attempt to boot in safe mode and then the
keyboard will not allow selection with up/down arrow keys.

I have not yet overclocked this machine and the only Bios adjustment made was to get the RAM to run
at 1600 mhz vs the 1033 it was running at when installed.

The only regular USB devices on this system are a wireless keyboard and USB Wacom tablet/mouse combo.
Had also been running Synergy with another computer on the network with each computer having it's own
monitor so you can move mouse from one computer to the other.

Please help!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Weird and wonderful problem!

Firstly I am not sure if you are aware but you can use the USB3 ports for USB2 devices also. Of course it could be a faulty motherboard but let's check some other things first. You are still using the original BIOS so update that to the most recent version using QFlash. When on the QFlash main page disable the Keep DMI Data option. Load optimised BIOS settings, save and exit. See if that does the trick.

If you are still having problems try going into the BIOS / Advanced CPU Features and disabling C1E, C3,C6, C7 and EIST then save and exit. See if the problem still manifests.

Post back afterwards.

Thanks for the reply.

Have downloaded file:
mb_bios_ga-x58a-ud3r_2.x_fb.exe

Where do I put this file to run it from QFlash?

You need to extrtact the file to a floppy disk or a USB pendrive. Make sure that you have enabled the Legacy USB Storage in the BIOS and then insert the drive into a motherboard port not a USB3 one. You might need to change the boot devices order in the BIOS also to USB HDD. For more information on how to flash the BIOS see her in our FAQ section: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html
If you have any problems post again.

OK, have successfully updated BIOS using QFlash. Now running "FB"

When that was complete there was no changes to the non-functioning USB ports.

Went back to BIOS and disabled C1E and EIST.  C3,C6, C7 were already disabled.

Still no change to USB functionality

What next?

In that case I would enable them again to give you their functionality back.
It would seem to be a software error as the hardware works alright up until Windows loads. Have you tried removing the USB ports and controllers in Device Manager and then installing them again properly?

Yes, have removed them many times from device manager.
If I scan for hardware changes they come back working. When I reboot they are not working.

I think the next thing is to remove everything from the USB ports and see if the problem recurs.

OK, I had all USB working by deleting from device manager and then scanning for hardware changes.

I unplugged all USB devices and then confirmed with PS2 mouse in device mgr that USB was still active.

I rebooted with no USB devices plugged in and when system came back up all USB was down again.

Please advise.

In that case I would think that it is a Windows problem maybe corrupt files. The only sure way is to format and do a clean install of the OS. Make sure that you backup all your important data first.

I'm going out now to get a new OS drive.
Will do clean install on new drive so I don't lose time searching for anything that I need on current drive.

Will post later with update on USB issues.

If the problem persists with new drive and clean install can I get an RMA on current MOBO?

I would say that if the clean install of the OS doesn't fix things then there would be nothing else for it other than RMA.

This is fixed. I bought a new OS drive and reinstalled everything.
Ports are working fine now with no issues.
Going to clone the new install on reformated old OS drive to put up for future security.

Thanks for your help!

Great news! I am glad it's sorted for you and was just a disk replacement. Cloning the new installation is a very sensible idea and then in the future you only have to update the drivers when you want to start again. ;)
