GA-Z68X-UD4-B3: Keeps rebooting after cold start
« on: May 21, 2011, 10:03:44 pm »
Hi All,

Back to Gigabyte, after the last couple of boards failed just days after the warranty, I was a bit disappointed, so I went Asus. But now I am back with the Z68 series boards.

I do have one gripe with this new Gigabyte board, that is the rear I/O shield. It is so flimsy and the little prongs dont even touch the ports and the slots do not properly align, leaving gaps and the bit that goes between the port is not even metal, just the decorative plastic.

For peace sake, Gigabyte could have done a better job than that, follow asus, they they have metalic foam cacking which makes it air tight as well.

Having paid £160 for this board, I expected top notch...sorry, rant over, just had to get it out of my chest, now can someone give me some quidance on the overclocking please.

I can set it to 4.5GHz and it will run fine with prime95, no crashes what so ever...until I turn power off at the socket and cold boot.  It keeps rebooting itself, after the first reboot a message comes up saying a problem occured due to overclocking, then it goes in a continues loop. I then have to reset the bios by shorting the  pins.

I then tried to lower the speed, thinking maybe its too high, but 4.4, 4.3, 4.2, 3.8, they all have the same symptom, when I cold boot. worm reboots are fine no problems, just when I turn off the power at wall socket.

The only thing that I am changing is the Multiplier and the memory is set to XMP profile in 'normal' mode.

Do I need to change anything else?

Thanks in advance.

 Hiya ROK......
Try forgetting about XMP....disable and set Manually and see if this makes any  difference to your problem........To answer your other comments........I thought you said you had only one gripe?.......... So why did you leave Asus for the problematic Gigabyte boards.......You could have shot yourself in the foot starting with a scathing attack then asking for advice, ... with so many of the top minds on this forum being ardent Gigabyte supporters , somebody may-well tell you to plug it into a 415v outlet to rectify the problem...........Post your findings as I'm sure being such a new chip/board, ...people will be interested whether it's a board fault or pilot error.

:D Maybe I should have said "one item" lol....seriously though, it is flimsey.

So why did you leave Asus for the problematic Gigabyte boards

I came back to Gigabyte because I read of issues with the Asus boards, also there is nit issue with the board, just I/O shield.

I will try with manual settings and update you guys.

Another thing, why does the Motherboard temp always 40oC, is that ok?

New board/chip! Don't really know.......When DM wakes Up in the morning he'll see this post and make a better qualified comment to this question.

Personally I have heard these new boards are warm, but not hot enough to cook an egg on.....when you say , 40C    is that the max you see it reach or is this a constant temp from boot and /or idle through to load ?.......Do you have plenty of air movement through the box ?.....see how you go with the manual timings

Hi,

I've tried setting the memory manually to 1600Mhz, its still doing it, even at stock speed....

This morning I tried with setting the memory to auto which picks up the memory as 1333Mhz (xmp disabled as well) and that seems to fix the issue.
I'll reconfirm when I get home.

These memory kit is 1600Mhz @1.5v, so not sure what the problem is, hopefully updated bios will fix it...

Thanks.

Hi

I would think that it is a BIOS issue probably. I haven't had anything to do with the Z68 boards but I am familiar with the P67 which is basically very similar and they run quite cool compared to previous versions. Does the temperature change or is it always the same ?

Sorry, for got about the m/b temp, it starts at 38c then goes to 40c after a little while...with prime95 running 42c.
I have 2x92mm fans bottom front, a 120mm at top reat, and a 120mm on the vga.

I did not change the memory voltage, I assume its 1.5v, xmp detects the memory correctly, 1600@1.5v.

I'd be surprised if the memory runs stable, 1600@ 1.5V....I thought 1.6v would be the minimum....really hard with such a new board......AA  what do you think DM?

There is no reason that the memory can't run stably at 1.5v as long as that is within it's specs. Why are you concerned by the motherboard temperature anyway ? It's not that high and obviously the sensor is working and not stuck as it does change with the load.

DM - Not too concerned, just that my p65 m/b was some thing like 27c idle.

I purposely bought the 1.5v memory because I thought these boards needed that, could have saved some cash if I had bought 1.65v.
Anyway, how much performance am I losing by running it at 1333? I'll live with that for now.

Thanks

To be honest I doubt you would even be able to tell the difference using everyday programs between 1333 and 1600. I expect we could get it to run at 1600 anyway but you would need to manually set the values but you would probably have to sacrifice some CPU speed to do it.
