I've made a bootable Linux USB pen drive with the following program:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

It worked 100% fine with my MSI 785GM-E51, but the 880GMA-UD2H refuse to boot.

Ok not my area but i did a search on this forum and read for 45 minutes what i searched was, linux install
Best thread found so far

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2823.0.html

Or you can search yourself and read. But absic and Dark mantis both post about installing from a usb drive in linux and it seems absic has a tad bit more experiance but it depends on who comes on first if the search doesnt help.

Hi there,

Silly question but did you create it on a PC or MAC? Sometimes USB Drives formatted or install drives created on a MAC aren't recognised properly.
Also what size Drive are you using? I tend to install from a 4 Gig USB Drive or smaller.
When you BOOT up are you hitting F12 to choose your BOOT Device? If you are, is the USB Drive being shown as a BOOT option?

Only if you have the USB drive inserted already. Wink

Yes, as DM says, if you try plugging your USB drive in after you have Booted the PC, it won't be seen so make sure it is plugged in first. Also, it is a good idea to use one of the USB ports on the back of the motherboard rather than from one of the headers and make sure it is a USB 2 port not the USB 3.

One other thing that just sprang to mind is that make sure that you have enabled Legacy USB Storage and Legacy USB Devices in the BIOS first.

Thanks for the answers (but I'm not a complete noob  Wink)
Yes, I have already checked all the options in the BIOS.

I've tested the same USB-key on two other systems. And they both booted just fine form it (a MSI 785 and an old socket 754  computer).
USB is working fine in windows in the ports I'm using on the Gigabyte board.

I have a same problem with GA-890FXA-UD7 (rev. 2.0). I has successfully booted from 8Gb flash drive on my previous MSI board, on my HP notebook  and few systems on my job. But the GA-890FXA refuses to boot from it. The BIOS settings are correct, bootup is started, but after 1-2 seconds stop with black screen. I think that may have been problems with memory managment. I use GRUB for DOS and Hiren's BootCD Pro Revision 1.7

Sometimes these problems can just be down to the choice of USB stick. I have one that will work on other PC's but it really doesn't like my current set-up when it comes to booting.

I have the same issue on a 890GPA-UD3H, actually, i have two of these boards and cannot boot from a USB drive.  I can take the same USB drive to a different system that is NON USB3, and they all boot fine.

I've been having this problem for several months now, and trying to overcome it still.

I have tried the following:

BIOS Upgrades.
Enable bios to boot from legacy USB drives.
Trying all USB ports on the back.
Disabling USB3 chipset
Boot order for USB-HD first.
F12 Booting from USB Drive
CMOS Clear and resets
Trying several different USB drives(All work from non USB3 motheboards)

Any IDEAS?

Thanks!

As absic has already stated some drives do not seem to work well with some boards. If you are looking to boot from a drive especially then it is probably safer to try and use the smallest USB drive that you can get your hands on. Below 2Gb is ideal.

You mean that this motherboard just would not work with USB keys  Undecided (in general)
But without jokes, this USB key works fine on every computer I see/use.
Besides, blaming the USB key is more an (poor) excuse than admitting that the motherboard isn't compatible.
My I ask why the other motherboards are working fine with it??

Hi, sorry if my answer seemed flippant, it wasn't meant to be and it wasn't a joke as I have found that some USB drives can just be fussy. Trying a different USB stick is just another option that might not have been considered.

I am not running the same board as you, I have a GA790XTA-UD4 my ScanDisk USB Drives work OK with this board but my friends ASUS Mobo doesn't like them, I don't know why, as his board accepts other USB sticks without issue. On the other hand my sister has a generic USB Drive that just doesn't like my PC but works OK with my laptop. I don't know why this is and have never really understood how a USB Stick can work on one machine but then not on another.

I'm not saying that it is the case in this situation and yesterday I asked runn3R to have a look at this thread, as I am concerned that there does seem to be a problem. I also had a chat with DM about it but we are at a loss to explain why there is a problem.

Yes I agree it does seem to be a silly situation but nonetheless real. As absic says it doesn't really make a lot of sense but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the quality of the USB drive(although sometimes size does seem to have a bearing). It used to be the same with floppy disks if you remember, they would read on one drive and then refuse on another. I think it is more analagous to DDR3 memory though, as in theory all DDR3 memory is built to the same standards and so it should in theory work in any DDDR3 motherboard however we all know that to be far from the case.

Maybe, but it is strange that a brand like MSI works well in all cases.
There must be (clever) solution why MSI is better with USB-keys.

In my situation you can say it's 2-0 for MSI against Gigabyte. (together with the unlocking problems)
