GA-970A-DS3 rev 1.0 FX-8320 BIOS F6
« on: November 20, 2012, 08:42:35 am »
Hello I am new to building computers and purchased the GA-970A-DS3 rev 1.0 motherboard and FX-8320 CPU thinking they were compatible due to being the same socket.

However when I tried to install windows 7 I bsod during it. After trying many different things to try and resolve the issue, I think it may be caused by the mobo and cpu being incompatible with each other. I've researched alot trying to figure out if the mobo and cpu are incompatible and have found information which leads me to believe they are . I have updated to the latest BIOS (F6) but still encounter the installation problems with windows 7. Could someone please tell me if the mobo and cpu are incompatible and if this is what could be causing the bsod during the windows install.

Thank-you

Hi there,

yes, you seem to be right on this, the CPU you have is not shown on the CPU support list for the motherboard. Check here: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=4122

This is probably why you are now encountering problems and I have to say I am surprised that you even managed to get the system to BOOT as usually it wouldn't do this.

It might be worthwhile contacting Gigabyte Technical support to see if there is a newer BIOS which does support the CPU as sometimes, there is one in beta phase that you cannot get except from them. If not, they will be able to say if the CPU will be supported in a future update or if you will need a different Mobo or CPU.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Hi,

I also have this motherboard (970A DS3) and it`s updated to bios F6.
I have just had to RMA back my AM3 FX 8120 Cpu as one of the cores is faulty :( Since the OP has had problems , if i`m shiped back a replacement 8320 (sucessor to 8120, Aria does not sell 8120 anymore) then i can not use it in this Gigabyte 970A-DS3 motherboard even with most up to date Bios F6 :(

What replacement mobo would  you recommend if they do indeed ship a 8320 back to me ?
Gigabyte 970A-DS3 rev1.0 Bios F6
AMD AM3 FX8120 @ 3.120Ghz
MSI Radeon HD 7770 Ghz Edition 1GB DDR5

F6 updates to Agesa 1.5.0.0, which includes the FX-8320.

The latest version shown in the compatibility list is F3, hence the confusion.

This doesn't mean the F6 is not at fault, there could be errors in it that would cause these problems.

Could try flashing it again, remember to 'Clear DMI'

I tend to think support for these processors was included in the F5 bios which was withdrawn after only a couple of days.

I think the F6 and newer bioses have basically locked out the proper support for them due to the boards limited power capabilities (although given an 8150 is supported I don't see why this should be the case).

Hi Everybody,

Just for information,

GA-970A-DS3 Rev3 is compatible with the AMD FX8320.
I have bought both, one week ago, but nowhere it is mentionned that they are compatible (the list of compatible CPU is not updated apparently on the gigabyte website).
So, I confirm that with a GA-970A-DS3 Rev3 (I have the Bios FB version I guess) the AMD FX8320 works perfectly.

See you,

I upgraded to th eF7 bios using a 970A-DS3 rev 1.0 and it now runs a Fx-8320 at stock with no problems.  Overclocking it has been difficult though - using a modded VRM cooler (some gpu ram heatsinks) I tried to get a basic 4GHZ OC, using a gelid cooler.. but wasnt stable..  So you can run an 8 core vishera on the board - but dont expect more than stock..the 8350 is prob a good choice due to higher stock speed
