hi,
i need some help.
1)
If i using DDR4-2666Mhz and non-k series skylake cpu with "GA-Z170x-Gaming 7"
can the DDR4 runing at 2666Mhz or it just simply downgrade to DDR4 2133MHz ?
2)
If it was downgraded to 2133Mhz by default, is it possible to bring it to 2666Mhz by adjust the bios memory setting manually. eg: CAS,...blah..blah..blah.
eg:
motherboard: gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming7
cpu: Core i5 6500 or Core i3 6100
ddr4: kingston-hyperx-savage-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-2666mhz

First, I'd only try to use memory that is on the QVL for my board (regardless of speed). This just makes life easier.
While it was possible to use faster memory down clocked to a slower speed previously, I've seen less and less tolerance for this with newer chipset, BIOS, CPU combinations.
If it were me and I was going to invest in a board with a non "k" CPU, I'd go with the slower standard (matched) memory. This is not to say that faster memory won't work, but the chance for compatibility and success is lower. I want to "build, install, use". I don't have the time to tinker with these things like I once did. Plus for the investment, we all just want a system that works.

if using k-series cpu mean need more extra $$$ for cpu+cooling system + performance ram.
actually i think the non-k i5 already meet the daily need .
and i like the spec of this motherboard very much.
just not sure should i push more $$$ into performance ram.
If the performance ram cannot working correctly (eg: 2666Mhz) under this circumstance (i mean non-k i5), it make no sence to waste the money, right? (mabe just take a random low budget model is more than enough.)
if it can be done (i don't mind if may need more effort to adjust the BIOS ), i think it's charming ...
the problem is,
seem that nobody (even people from gigabyte) have the clear answer of this question,and
help it's customer to make a smart choice.
so sad... :o

OK what he is trying to tell is that a i5-6500 & i3-6100 will only support DDR4-1866/2133 at stock speed. That is why the 2666 will run at 2133. If you want to run the memory at 2666. You will have to like he said tinker with the CPU to OC it.
When the motherboard companies put spec up for the board like memory. Support for DDR4 3866(O.C)/3733(O.C)/3666(O.C) /3600(O.C.) /3466(O.C.) /3400(O.C.) /3333(O.C.) /3300(O.C.) /3200(O.C.) /3000(O.C.) /2800(O.C.) /2666(O.C.) /2400(O.C.) /2133 MHz memory modules
The (O.C.) means Over Clock. That is you will have to OC your CPU to get the memory to run at those speed. The only one that it will run at the speed without OC is 2133. That is why your memory defaults to 2133.

I have a GA-Z170N-Wifi with a i5-6500 (non-K) with a Crucial Ballistics Tactical DDR4 running at 2666mhz (1333mhz clock). The PnP Speed is 2400(SPD Jedec Info), and you have to go into the BIOS enable the XMP profile1 for 2666, thats it !!! there is no need to change B-CLK or any other.

But i think 2800(1400mhz clk) is the limit.
