Title: turn off power to USB
Post by: ABully on October 07, 2010, 09:10:46 am
Hello guys..... I'm having a GA-P55-USB3 with i5 760 running on windows ultimate 64..... i have numerous USB devices hooked on to the PC including external fans..... the problem i'm facing is they don't switch off after the PC shuts down......... i noticed my notebook which has XP home premium turns off the devices after shutdown; hell even when it goes to hibernation........ i checked the bios for any adjustements relating to USB power; NADA...... i checked the device manager settings for USB....... they show that all USB Root Hubs are self powered and there is no option to disable the power only........

I would like to control the power to each USB hubs after shutdown or hibernation or sleep if possible or have them cut off if there is no way of controlling them individually...........

Any insights???????

I think the problem you are facing is to do with the new USB power for the charging of USB devices even when turned off. I am not aware of any way to disable this apart from removing the power source. I will check and get back to you.

I have just been looking into it for you and the only possibility as far as I can see is if  the option S4/S5 is disabled in the BIOS. All I can suggest is to read the info below and then have a look at ypur BIOS settings and see if you could alter them. Also put a question into GGTS and see if they can help.

You could also try disabling USB Storage (Also called Legacy USB) in the Integrated Peripherals page of the BIOS.  You could also try disabling wake by keyboard and mouse in the power options page.  Also disable all the C3/C4/C5 ect options in the CPU advanced options.

I know this can also have something to do with PSU's, as some keep mice powered up when the PC is off and some do not, due to the power always constant and (ON) for the +5VSB rail (+5V Standby).  That is just how things are designed these days, some older motherboards have a jumper to enable/disable the +5VSB power.

If none of that works then your only solution would be a PCI/PCIE power USB controller card for the devices that bother you while the system is off and they are still powered on, they would be off for sure if connected to a controller card.

Thanks Lsdmeasap........ i'll try them out...... the reply i got from GGTS is

"1. This is Gigabyte design spec, allows rechargeable mouse or cell phone can still be charged even the PC is turned off.
2. This also allows PC to wake up by USB or PS2 mouse and keyboard, without further setting of jumper on the motherboard"

I guess thats the design "FLAW" of the new gen boards.........

I have an audio interface pluged in the USB ports that I wouldn't like to leave ON all the time. I tried changing the state of the ErP parameter in BIOS and this worked for me (Z97X-GAMING 3 card).
