Title: z68xp-ud4 problems with gtx 460
Post by: zannare on November 10, 2011, 05:40:54 pm
i just buy that motherboard but i got an big problem with gtx 460

i got 2 gtx 460 1gb, one evga ssc+ and one gigabyte oc

if i put the evga on pciex 16x and the gigabyte on pciex 8x all run ok, stable at 900/2000Mhz with only 1,02v

if i put the gigabyte on pciex 16x and evga on pciex 8x all run ok on 2d but with 90% of game and all benchmark i got really big problem, portion of screen go random up or down

if i put an single card on pciex 16x (evga or gigabyte its the same) just after the login screen of win 7 the monitor become black and i cant see anything while i hear then desktop are loaded
i try with latest 5 nvidia driver version and even the beta one, but nothing change

i test the 2 gtx 460 on onther pc and both work well

i try tu put old graphic card(ati x1950xt, nvidia 7500, nvidia 8800) on pciex x16 of z68xp ud4 and all work, 2d and 3d

the only conclusion i can get its then that motherboard its incompatible with gtx 460

anyone got same problem and/or an solution?

ps. i got f5 bios, motherboard rev 1.0
ps1: sorry for my english  ::)

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Just out of interest, what are the BIOS settings for the graphics cards?

According to your motherboards specification the graphics card is compatible:

By the way, your English is better than my Italian!!!! ;)

i saw only 2 setting about graphic card on bios
Onboard VGA -----> i try all options
init Display first ------> i try all option

yesterday night I tried to put single Gtx 460 on pciex x8, i can enter on desktop but soon  system become unstable and i get an bsod, on reboot i get an bios error

when both Gtx 460 are installed i tried to remove sli bridge and power supply from card on pciex x8 and all work well, 2d and 3d
but if i remove the card from pciex 8x i still have black screen just after login

all the problems appear when i install the nvidia driver, when i safe clean them to try another version i can enter on desktop on all configuration(sli, single card on pciex 16x and single card on pciex 8x) with default ms driver

another strage thing is then i have 8 Nvidia Hight Definition Audio Controller on sli while on previous motherboard i had only 2 for each card

tomorrow i will try with older bios, thats the last chance before i sell it

very bad experience for my first gigabyte motherboard on 20 years of computer  :'(

 ;) Hi zannare,  ;)

Be patient, we will find a mutually agreeable.

What software do you take to clean, remove the old drivers?

You confirm that each of the graphics work well individually? Both in the main port Pci-ex (16x) and secondary (8x)?
Thank you for purchasing a product from Gigabyte.
Me too I like their products, such as GA-P35-DQ6. Purchased in late July 2007.

As for your sound problem, I (or other forum members) I will return later.

You say, I cited:

if i put an single card on pciex 16x (evga or gigabyte its the same) just after the login screen of win 7 the monitor become black and i cant see anything while i hear then desktop are loaded
i try with latest 5 nvidia driver version and even the beta one, but nothing change

Have you used software to clean the registry? Specify name Please.
And every time you try one of your cards. And with each individual change of ex-PCI slot?

It would be nice to mention the exact model of your graphics cards (letters and numbers on the model).
If you can link to the website of the model (official website of the manufacturer) of each card, it would be much appreciated.

What is your usual language? I communicate very well in French ... and you?

I volunteer here and I practice the use of English writing.

Thank you for contacting us.
I hope to find a hardware or software solution.

I does not engage or does not admit an obligation of result or of means from official RMA and service GIGABYTE products.

What software do you take to clean, remove the old drivers?

thats what i did every time to safe unistall driver

1. Unplug your computer from the net then right click on Computer-->Properties-->Device Manager
2. Click on Device Manager
3. Expand Dislpay Adapters
4. Right Mouse Button over the Video card Name
5. Select Uninstall, Click Delete the driver software for this Device
6. Do not reboot
7. With new technologies from nvida from Physx, 3D Vision, or their gpu audio whatever extra you have in stalled you will want to uninstall them in your control panel in programs in features *Older OS's add/remove programs*
8. Now That Window I told you to leave open with the NVIDIA directory now Delete your Driver Version Folder Example 162.22 then empty recycle bin after deleating the file.
8. REBOOT
9. Restart in Safe mode, Use the F8 key while your rebooting to do so select Safe Mode.
10. Now run Driver Sweeper "be sure to run as administrator"
11. Make sure you tell it to Remove your NVIDIA Display Drivers, along with Physx
12. Once it is finished Reboot. Once in XP/Vista/Win 7 reboots it will just reinstall a generic VGA adapter don't worry, at least its not the nvidia one.
13. Now Install the latest Video Drivers for your card.
14. Once it is finished installing REBOOT
15. Happy Gaming

nope they didnt on that motherboard, if i put individually vga on pciex 16x just after the win 7(64 Ultimate) login i get black screen and monitor say "no signal" while i hear classic sound of loaded desktop, thats happen with latest 5 Nvidia driver and current beta
but i reinstall win 7 too many time in these day and one time i let win7 install driver for vga from windows update, it install an never see 8.17.12.8562 driver, with that driver i can slow enter on win7 desktop but system are very unstable, 3d dont work and after few min i get an blue screen of death

if i put individually vga on pciex 8x with all driver i can slow enter on win 7 desktop but system are very unstable 3d dont work and after few min i get an blue screen of death, on reboot 90% of time i get an message of an ipotetic fail overclock and bios setting get an reset to optimal value

like i said before

Hello, good evening zannare,

i spent tons hours to try solve that problem so understand me if my patient its near gone

I too have 20 years of computer use.

Like many of us, for various reasons, you spend hours to solve your situation. It's unfortunate to live like situation.
But when each person finds the solution is another challenge made to the hardware or software.

I understand that you are expansive, but I assure you that together we can find a solution, with patience, research and passionate with the complicity of members of the forum.

The forums are a great help to the user community of computer products.

It would be nice to specify (if you have):

Like a dual boot linux-windows;
If physX, or other nVidia technology are presents;
If installed, the version of DirectX - Direct3D;
If Open GL, Open CL, Open AL, other API (application programming interface) or Game Engine are presents;

(That seems to be the case, as I saw in step 7, above mentioned.)
I said, as other forum member may have a similar situation to yours.

Drivers to remove from System Disk and Windows Registry

Have you made your uninstalls, as cited by you, by removing the API, DirectX or Game Engine?

With Windows 7, to remove and delete software, I use:

Windows Programs and  Features in Configuration panel.
CCleaner
Cleanup
jv16PowerTools
Wise Disk Cleaner
Wise Registry Cleaner
Uniblue Registry Booster
Systweak RegCleaner Pro
Yamicsoft Windows 7 Manager

You are free to use other softs at your convenience.
You can also still to use continue your method step 15, as cited above in your post, and what we give as suggestions on the forum.

Make sure there are no duplicate equipment.
As 2 times the same or not same keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc.
Unless you have actually installed and connected in the same or not same material twice as hard disks, printers, DVD player, etc..
I said, as other forum member may have a similar situation to yours.

After cleaning and deinstallation of software.

From Gigabyte web site : http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3910#driver
Have you installed Intel INF installation?
Have you installed Intel Management Engine Interface?
Have you installed Intel VGA Driver?
Have you installed or update the latest audio driver for Dolby Home Theater PCEEv4 support?

  zannare

There's several things that are going to play a big part in......" why my machine will not run properly"......the most obvious one is power....or the lack of it.

under load the GTX-460 will consume about 270 Watts.....EACH!........X2......and thats 540W just for the cards alone...... there is also the chance that this load potentially damaged the PSU

This is one of the reasons that we constantly recommend now nothing under 650W period!

You also need to read up on DVI-I and DVI-D.......this could also come into your problems ;)

While it may be that your PSU is not powerful enough to make your graphics work well together.
Can you tell us what is the company and model of your PSU?
And also that (PSU) of the other computer that was used to test your graphics card.

You can use the PSU of the other computer and see if it goes better with.

Gloup_Gloup

ffs gtx 460 dont consume 270 watt ...... thats the TDP of gtx 580 ..... thats big difference, gtx 460 got 160 watt TDP

my psu its an CM silent pro gold 600watt, are more then enought for my configuration

ad its the same psu i used to test single card on other pc ...... because my other pc its an mini itx Asrock h67 + i3 2100t +4gb 1333 ram +2tb hd + 120w pico psu .... so i just replace pico psu with my CM and put vga on pciex x16 and install nvidia driver

i think u really dont understand one thing, SLI work with evga on pciex x16 and gigabyte on x8 !!!!!!!! 3dmark of my current configuration (http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2149423?show_ads=true&page=%2F3dm11%2F2149423%3Fkey%3DWppSOM9aTo1y3fo9gaWg5A)
dont ask me why cpu score are so low, its another minor problem of that motherboard
that the cpu score i get with my old motherboard with exactly same cpu setting (http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2003255)  ...... but with really lower voltage (another minor problem of ud4.....)

wherever im pretty sure then i found the cause of my problems, evga technical support say me then its the Nvidia Hd audio hardware/driver the problem
on some z68 motherboard  with some gtx 460 it cause an irq conflict with black screen login and/or bsod

they give me and so long method to try solve that problem, but they didnt know if work for my motherboard
i dont know if i have another time to waste while wait the new msi p67 gd65 ordered today

Yes the drivers you mentioned could be part of the problem......that was coming further down after ruling out hardware issues......But!

Unless I'm reading the table incorrectly.......... ;)

Yes.....Aussie Allan... it definately states that the GTX- 460 consumes 270 watts and you explained this fact politely as well. 8)

As was intended......admittedly this is under full load ..... but this is the figure ultimately must be used to configure power usage......but as you say this is only part of the problem........I would be researching and  looking at an effective level of PSU power to protect my /your system......PSUs have a nasty habit of taking out other hardware when they do go from overloading.

A excellent configurator is HERE!.....http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp  .... Enjoy!...where here to help!

  Aussie Allan

so u think then an graphic card consume 140watt in idle according your link ...... thats make me sad

thats the power consume of full system, not only the vga

look that video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9alvKly7t8)
thats the power consume with an power angry x58 motherboard + and very very very power angry 980x processor heavy overclocked
sandy bridge system with an i5 2400 consume 1/3 vs that system (apart vga)

and wherever that power consume are get before PSU, so the real watt output of psu its around 8/10% less with an 90% Efficiency PSU

Thanks for the reads.......where actually here to help you........I own and use a 480 so I know how hungry they can be......the 460s power consumption is what it is......

  http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/geforce-gtx-460-gf104-fermi,review-31944-14.html

 http://www.techspot.com/review/309-geforce-gtx-460-sli-performance/page9.html

All I'm trying to do is point out is with a 600W PSU the system is on a knife edge under load.....when and if a system/psu pops under an overdraw limit.....it usually take several other components with it.

Same problem here. (2012 July)

There are thousands of people with this problem and many many post all over about the issue.
Most about gtx460 but also other 400 and some 500 series GTX. Zannare describes classic symptoms.
Absolutely definitely not a PSU issue, please stop saying it might be!

I have:
GA-X58A-UD3R-Rev2.0
GA Geeforce GTX460 1GB
CORE i7-950/3.00GHz
Seasonic M12II-620 Watt
Patriot Viper2-Sector7 PV7312G2000ELK 12GBkit(4gbx3)
Inferno SSD Sata 60GB
Win 7 Pro 64-bit

I've been fighting with this problem on and off for months now.
1) Starts as random crashes (games browsing and even desktop) BSOD (blue or black screen) with auto reset or hard reset needed. Lost connection with graphics adapter sometimes displayed.
2) Sometimes it lead to cyclical crashes on windows login screen. (THAT'S WHEN YOU KNOW DOOM IS HERE)
3) After this PC may get into the habit of crash even in safe mode, in windows boot CD, and even bios.
4) After trying a million things it may fix itself and become stable again.
   I tried:
   - 5 BIOS versions
   - 7 nVedia drivers
   - reinstalled windows 7 times
   - rolled back windows to a clean windows image 5 times
   - messing with bios clock and voltages. (not in anger because I am afraid, and other users report next to no improvements)
   - turning PC at the power rather then just pressing reset used to help 3 months ago, not this time.
5) Magically after some combination of things system will become stable-ish again (yet I haven't put my finger on it, so illusive)
6) Use PC and hold your breath for a week, then start playing games
7) Just you think its OK except for a few random crashes the cyclical login crashes are back!
AND THE CYCLE STARTS OVER

I have just come out of step 6 after a 3 month good run, and:
- Found moving to PCI-E 8x will get me out of the login crashes.
- I rolled back to a clean windows with no nVedia drivers.
- I find I can even go back to 16x but not if I do anything tricky, as soon as it crashes it goes back to cyclical crashes at windows login and I have to move back to 8x slot to get it out.
- Just updated to FH BIOS from FE1, going to try some different nVidea drivers to see if FH is better and can run 3D reliably on the 8x slot and then move to 16x (wishful thinking)

I spent about 80+ hrs on this over 20 days, spread over a year. I now think of it as a sport! or I am insane..

People say its some sort of hardware and driver fault, mostly with nVedia, but maybe MOBY chipset also, that manifests in several Motherboards with these 400 series and some 500 series GTX cards.
I am yet to find someone who has a definitive explanation or solution.

I have to test a theory about IRQ conflicts causing the issue, between the graphics card and audio or network card.
People report some success with RMA, so that will be step 2, even if that means I loose the game.

(I also get some random 2-3 sec freezing in windows, and some games. It could be part of that "loosing connection with graphics adapter" problem where windows fixes itself rather then crashing, but not sure if thats that it is or that it is related)

I love life :') Soon I will be a Mac user :)  or I might become homicidal

Thank you
