Z77X-UP5 TH debug A0 or D4
« on: November 15, 2012, 03:24:08 pm »
I have just built my new system with an i5 3570k mounted on a Z77X-UP5 TH  and when I boot up I get a debug code of D4 on the little on board code display, however if I go into BIOS do nothing and just save and exit it goes back to A0 until the next time I down power re-power.

Does anyone have any clue as to why this could be? I have flashed the BIOS to F11 which is the latest one on the website.

Just seems odd that if I boot via bios with no changes then it sits at A0 but if not I get the D4. The thing is if the led display wasn't there then I guess I would never know as everything seems fine?

Hi there,

the A0 Code means everything is OK.

The D4 code means there is an issue with PCI resources so the obvious question here is what other devices are you running?

You could try the F12c beta BIOS which you can get from TweakTown via this link: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html and see if that resolves the problem.

I have 2 EVGA gtx 680's in SLI, the thing is if I boot up and go into BIOS do nothing just select save and exit then I get the A0. However if I just boot normally without a trip through the BIOS then I get the D4.

I Have just flashed to F12c now and it's exactly the same. I'm just confused as to why booting through Bios appears to fix/mask the problem?

I am still no closer to a solution on this, I think I'm finding it more annoying as it seems to be telling me of an issue that isn't there! In some respects I just think I will live it but every time I glance over and it's there it irritates me.

Any suggestions would be awesome, many thanks

Nick

Sorry, I don't have an answer and I am not sure why this is happening but I would suspect that the BIOS is at the heart of it. As this may be the case it maybe a good idea to raise a support ticket with Gigabyte and see what they suggest.

In the meantime, have you tried altering any of the settings in BIOS with regard to peripherals that might be taking PCI bandwidth allocation?

I'm only guessing here but I would try reducing the amount of I/O's for thunderbolt from 20K to 4K (if you are not using Thunderbolt devices) and see if that helps at all.

Also remember that every piece of hardware on your system will be vying for resources from the PCI Bus (Check the block diagram in the user's manual page 8, for an idea of how this works) and see if by removing other devices it helps with the problem.

I know this isn't a perfect solution but it may give an idea as to where the "bottleneck" is coming from.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions, I have tried all what you suggested and nothing has helped...

Also tried removing a GPU and seeing if that made a difference and it didn't so I am stumped.

I have opened up a ticket with Gigabyte though so hopefully might get some where.

Cheers

Nick

do you have a speaker plugged into the F_PANEL connector?  What beeps does it make?

Mine boots to A0 as well which means all is OK.  except when it sleeps, then it goes to 03 (as it should.  Means sleep mode S3) but when it wakes it stays on 03.  Seems fine and this has happened on several boards and by different makers.

Did you go into the BIOS and load system defaults?  Sometimes settings get stuck and cause weird errors.  Even try removing power cord from PSU and removing battery and clearing CMOS.  Make sure to load system defaults after clearing cmos, and save & exit immediately, then go back into BIOS for any other changes.

I have no speaker F_Panel so I don't get any beeping unfortunately.

Yeah I get he D3 and the A0 but also when I shutdown from having either the D3/A0 the last thig that I see is the D4 then on the reboot that is the code displayed once all the post codes have cycled through.

I have had the power on numerous occasions and have tried 3 different BIOS's now all with the same result.

I have also tried with just one graphics card in the main slot and I still get the code. The strange thing is I ran a benchmark on my Graphics cards with the A0 code and the D4 code displayed and the result is exactly the same which kind of means there is no issues on the PCI Bus from what I can see. It's like there is something that happens during the shutdown sequence that gives this locked in D4 code until I pop through the BIOS again?

Also tried the system defaults as well.

I take it to get a post beep I would need to find myself one of those little 4 pin internal speakers to attach to that F_Panel?

yes, your rear speaker ports won't work for the BIOS.  Maybe hit your local computer repair store or on old case you can pull one from.

Speaking with Giga support it could be ram problems so I am just sorting out some more ram to see if that fixes the issue at all. So fingers crossed.

Well that was a waste of cash in a way, another lot of ram and the problem is still there so looks like it could be the board which is annoying as that means I will lose my pc for a while so it can get sorted unless they can find another reason that may be causing it.

Ouch, sorry to read that.

I am running this board with 16 Gig of Corsair Vengeance RAM at 1600MHz and have not encountered this issue but, I am not running dual GPU's.

Before sending the board back though, have you tried the latest BIOS F12e which came out this week? You can download it from TweakTown here: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html

Could you post the full spec's of your system as you haven't done so and there may be something else causing the problem.

Full specs are:-

CPU- i5 3570K
Mobo- Z77x- UP5 TH
Cooler- Phanteks
PSU- Corsair AX750
GPU- 2x EVGA GTX 680 Superclocked Signature 2
SSD- Samsung 830, 256Gb
HDD1- Samsung F1 750Gb
HDD2- Seagate Barracuda 2Tb
Case- NZXT switch 810
Mouse- Cyborg RAT 9
Key Board- Qpad MK85 Cherry Red
Monitor- Benq XL2420T but that got RMA'd due to dead pixels so waiting on refund as there is no stock so may go for a Asus 27" 144Hz.

Well I seem to have picked up a new issue :(

I just updated to 12e Bios and now I cannot access the BIOS as it doesn't power up the USB slots until after the splash screen has gone and windows has started haha!
