GA-Z87X-OC blank running problem, need some help here!
« on: September 02, 2013, 11:29:09 pm »
Hi guys, have updated my rig!
But i'm having trouble with it, problem is, that sometimes during working Windows or during just boot after shutdown, or in other differenct circumstances and places i have my screen going completely blank, no BSOD, no post codes - no nothing, rig just keeps runing, but i can't do nothing with that (even shutdown or rest doesn't work!), except unplug it from power :\

Using GA-Z87X-OC (latest stable F6 bios), i7-4770k and 8Gb G.SKILL F3-17000CL8D-4GBXMD, 2133mHz, CL8, 8 9 8 24 2T
My settings are: everything left on auto, except i turned off all C states, turned off thermal monitor, turned off Intel's OC (it runs on stock x35 multiplier), turned off iGFX. And set manually my GTX580 PCI-E to gen 2.0 as it is.
And then i manually filled 8 9 8 24 2T values of RAM timings, and set exactly 1.65V as it was written on memory.

Question is WTF is that?
I broke my head off with that stupid random problem, probably it's not very successfull bios itself?
Maybe i've missed some setting? (i'm kinda new to Z87 chipset).
Should i set some voltages manually?

But problem looks very weird in my opinion, it's not even BSOD or error or something...Just BLANK running.

Load Optimized defaults and try with only 2 sticks of RAM.
If you can go in BIOS,then your card working OK.
Set in BIOS your boot drive priority to boot in Windows.

It's F6, i'll try to turn it on, but interesting what it can do to system stability except more heat? :)

Already loaded optomized defaults it's ok with 4 or 2 rams, it doesn't look like ram problem, happens pretty much randomly...
I mean most of times i can boot in bios and windows, it's just sometimes it turns off like that.

P.S. I'm ex58 too btw!
P.P.S. Now i wanted to boot and 3 times in a row got this effect....wtf :\
resetting the battery now, will try to load optimized and do everything as mentioned.

Ok, loaded optimized, 2 sticks of RAM can go to bios, tried like 4 times in a row it's ok.
What do you mean by "Set in BIOS your boot drive priority to boot in Windows.", just to set SYSTEM drive as 1st?
If so - done.
Oh, and also i haven't turned iGFX off, but that would be a shame since it seem to generate more heat...

Do you think it could be videocard due my manual setting for pci-e gen2?

P.S. What is this setting under Bios features - storage boot option controls, which set to Legacy or UEFI?

UPDATE
Have just inserted 2 other sticks of RAM infinite boot with post code 15.
Though it haven't done before...

Any ideas?

UPDATE 2
Seem that stock RAM 1.65V is not enough for 4 mem sticks on this board.
When i set RAM voltage on auto it reads like this:
2 sticks 1.656v readings  (= when i set 1.65v manually)
4 sticks 1.668v readings  (= when i set 1.655v manually )

So will try to use 1.655v and see how it reacts, hopefully not only 15 inifinte boot will end, but also this blank running problem.

I've had a very bad experience about RAM voltage in the past, so i'm kinda afraid of going beyond...But maybe this motherboard just work like that. any comments would be appreciated.

Interesting how the hell did i managed to pass OCCT high and low memory load each ~12 hours without errors or BSODs, but have those blank running and today's 15 infinite...I see absolutely no logical behaviour here :\

you may ask Gigabyte technical support.

http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/technical-support.aspx
they will try to collect the same devices as yours to check the issue.

Good idea, i'll do that, but at the same time i got 6 days to moneyback, and they surely won't answer that fast....
So any ideas?
Have nothing like that in prvieous X58-ud7 motherboard, so it's gotta be connected with motherboard somehow.

I got few more suspicions...
To troubleshoot i install windows and connect then devices one by one, problem comes like that:

When i connect my last devices, either 5th HDD or CD-ROM (doesn't really matter which device) - it starts blank run after or short after this case.
I got GTX580 connected to monitor, 4 dimms, audiocard, 250Gb WD velociraptor, 3tb WD caviard red x2, WD green (doesn't really matter which of hdd i connect, so it's definately not hdd itself trouble), also couple of usb devices, which doesn't seem to be the case. All of it connected to 1000W Corsair's PSU, which in my mind is extra reliable, and i strongly doubt that it could fluctuate during time for such amount, that it's not enough to power all of this.
So anyway, when i connect another one hard drive (i got another WD Velociraptor, but it doesn't really matter, i'v)e tryed different) or CD-ROM - it starts to fail. I've tried different SATA cables, couple of different corsairs power connectors, still blank run occur.

Seems to be conncected with powering, but i'm 100% sure that this is motherboard \ it'ssettings, coz then i would see exactly same on X58-UD7, but i haven't.

Dammit...seem to fail even without it.

Ok now i'm pretty sure about reason.

If i use 4+ SATA devices (doesn't matter at all which one, any hard drive, CD-ROM etc i have tryed with different PSU connectors and different connection ports, to check if it's fail uf PSU, but no - it's not)...So it's clearly motherboard cannot handle more than 4 SATA devices.

Questions is LOLWHAT?)))))))
Top overclocker motherboard can not do this even though it have 6 SATA connectors for some reason?
Is this ok...?
