If this board ships with a f2 bios lets say and the processor I want to use isn't supported until f3 or later, will I be able to update the bios without buying a f2 supported processor? thx

Yes. format a usb drive in fat 32. Download the latest bios and then take to your computer you need to flash.

Do not start it till your usb is ready with new bios.  put usb in slot and power on when it is powering on hit the end key. Tell it to update from drive. When it restarts you will have latest bios

You welcome i just had to do that with my  gaming rig i ordered a 4790k to put in it and it shipped with bios f5 and my CPU isn't supported till f6 so i had to just go thru all this myself and it worked like a charm.  Just put in my 4790k and booted to my usb and hit end and updated and upon restart it saw my CPU correctly and has ran fine since.

Well its time to build a new pc and this board looked sweet. My Gigabyte X48-DS5 has served me well for many years but its aging and lacking a lot of the newer technologies (usb 3.0, sata III, DDR3 etc... ) I thought I read somewhere that you could flash it without the supported cpu but its good to hear it from someone who has actually done it. thx again

Thanks mate! I was planning to get this board as well with the 4790K and was worried that it wouldn't detect the CPU if I got an older BIOS.  Now I can buy it with confidence  ;D
