GeForce 970 G1 - Fanspeed at 34 % - noisy

GeForce 970 G1 - Fanspeed at 34 % - noisy
« on: September 28, 2014, 01:01:23 pm »
Hi,

is it possible to get the fans lower than 34%?

The graphics card is at 30 degrees, so a slightly lower fanspeed would be totally ok.

At this time i couldn't recommend the G1 970 - because it is too loud at idle Speed!

Or is it still possible to edit the bios with nibitor?

While I wouldn't say the card is noisy (unless you have no other cooling fans on at the same time), it is a bit strange that the likes of MSI and Asus can make cards that shut the fans off completely when the card isn't under load. Seems a bit of overkill to me.

BIOS update, Gigabyte?

I just wanted to get a readable headline.

No it is not "noisy", but it is definitely hearable in a normal system when in idle mode.
Since you mentioned the MSI and ASUS cards, which are turning on their fans at 60 degrees, I hope, that Gigabyte offers a bios update soon, to get the fans to 20 % ?

Does the rpm actually go down to the equivalent to 34%?

Watching the auto-fan and playing with manual fan control, my 970 G1 here seems to do this:
0..50% = 1600rpm
50..100% = 1600..3200rpm, linear with 1% = 32rpm

So while the auto-fan is happily adjusting around at 3x% idle, it's entirely pointless as the card is effectively locked to 50% min fanspeed.
Considering I barely hit 60% fan while gaming at 1479 core / 7802 mem, that seems a bit ... odd.

You're right. 50 % is the effective minimum. I get around 2400 rpm while playing BF 4 (but in a small case) at standard clock.

I tested the following with afterburner:

at 34 % ~ 1614-1622
at 40 % ~ 1614-1621
at 50 % ~ 1615-1623
at 55 % ~ 1734-1743
at 60 % ~ 1891-1901
at 70 % ~ 2201-2224
at 80 % ~ 2526-2533
at 90 % ~ 2846-2858
at 100%~ 3165-3182

Good god I wish I knew about this before hand (not one review seemed to mention this), got one today at idle the noise is incredibly annoying a constant and audible droning sound (and definitely the fans put fingers on fans to stop them noise issue instantly gone).  Have anything going music, video or game and it is drowned out but when there's nothing else it is hideous.  I'm hoping they'll patch this out so fans will stop at certain temperatures, it's either that or I seriously need to consider returning this and getting one of the other 970's.

I was about to create a thread with the same issue.

With an idle temperature of 26-27º, there is just no point in having the fans running at 34%. I bet this card could even turn off the fans in idle like MSI and ASUS and temperatures won't suffer much.

Please Gigabyte allow us to lower down the fan with a new bios. It's a little bit annoying having a great card like this flawed with an issue so easy to solve. 1640 rpm is noisy for idle.

The other point is, that the minimum fan speed is 50% and not 34%.

It is only shown 34%.

The fans should be around 1078 rpm at 34% and not ~1620 rpm

Yeah, you are right about that. I've sent another ticket to Gigabyte and I'm waiting for the answer, but I'm not very confident they will care about it.

I have the Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce 3x OC version GV-N970WF3OC-4GD 1.0 and the same noisy fan at idle issue.

The fans cannot be set below approx 1500-1600rpm and hearing a constant drone from them in otherwise quite PC.
Temps are very good, and cooler works well at load where noise is more expected, was not expecting such noise at idle/low temps.

Have raised a ticket and hope BIOS update will be possible to lower this, otherwise may have to resort to ghetto fitting a couple of quiet 120mm fans onto it.

Same thing here. I had a silent PC until i buy this card. Totally satisfied with the performance but i can clearly hear it when i code or i browse the net. Afterburner says that the fans runs at ~1620 rpm (41%). Temperature at 32 degres.

Please, release a BIOS update with lower fans speed to make this card the best GTX 970 card!

Worked for me, thanks a bunch  :)
Went for 10% and now Afterburner showing ~1200 rpm at idle, and huge improvement in noise.

Used the nvflash version linked to here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1514085/official-nvidia-gtx-970-owners-club/4890#post_23052103

Thanks again :)

Today is a happy day!
Went from ~1620rpm to ~1110rpm with this trick.

Saved original BIOS with gpu-z 0.8.0 (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2418/techpowerup-gpu-z-v0-8-0/)

Modified it with Maxwell II BIOS Tweaker (http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=4945169&postcount=1)
Set minimum fan speed to 10%.

Flashed with NVFlash (http://www.overclock.net/t/1517316/extract-and-flash-gtx-970-and-980-firmware-gpuz-test-build-and-new-nvflash-5-190/80#post_23037661)

Afterburner now showing ~1110rpm (still showing fan percentage at 34%) and the fan noise is now very satisfying.

Thanks to Thulk for the link and to ahb for testing!
