GTX 970 G1 issue w/ monitor

I've searched this forum but none of the solutions suggested have fixed my problem.

When I launch a game, my monitor goes into standby mode after about 5 mins. The monitor has power, but won't come out of standby mode, even if I try to manually make it do so. The temp of the GPU is at about 53 C when this happens (temp monitored by MSIAfterburner) so I don't believe it to be an overheating issue. There is also enough voltage to the GPU. I tried updating drivers, rolling back drivers and reseating the GPU with no luck. I'm not much of a PC tech head but know enough to do some basic troubleshooting.

This is a new system (about 2 months old) and this issue started cropping up about 2 days ago. any advice is appreciated.

Here are my system specs:
AMD FX 8350
GeForce GTX 970 G1
8 GB ram
Gigabyte 970A-DS3P motherboard
Corsair bronze cx 600
Cooler master hyper 212 evo
Dell S2330 MX monitor
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
