RAID 5 & HDDs: 4 Drives in Raid 5, 1 Storage Drive & 1 SSD (OS)

Hey,

I'm not sure how exactly I'm to go about this, or if it's possible, but I'm hoping to have the following setup:

I've got 4 x 3TB drives, 1 x 2TB, and 1 x 120GB SSD, and I would like to have the 4 x 3TB drives in RAID 5 (Media and general files), with the 2TB being a standalone drive (Applications/programmes), along with the SSD hosting my OS.

The SSD is currently hosting my OS, and I've plugged in all the other drives into my system, put what I've needed on the 2TB (from an older HDD), and have the 3TB drives sitting empty. I've plugged them all in to run some tests to see if there were any bad blocks, and all is good.

How would I go about doing the above? As I understand it, I'm unable to set individual SATA ports to particular RAIDS/Modes, so I would need to plug in all 3TB drives in ports 0 - 3 and set that to RAID in bios, then plug my SSD and 2TB into ports 4 and 5, and leave it as AHCI. Is this correct?

Beyond that point, I'm lost and confused as to whether (1) I need to install any drivers, whether I can do this on an existing installation of Windows, or (2) will I need to reinstall Windows on my SSD? (3) If it is possible, and all is up and running, how can/will I monitor the RAID (i.e. if it is building/rebuilding, etc.)? (I don't always have my PC running, and would like to turn it off when not in use for long periods; sleeping, away from home, etc.).

Greetings,
Your options. 
RAID can either be SATA3_0~3 or 4~5.
0~3 will support RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10
4~5 RAID 0 or 1

If you do RAID 5 (3 disk members) on 0~3 and put your SSD and 2TB data on ports 4, 5 in AHCI mode, you will lose your CD/DVD Drive.  You lose use of 1 stand alone port SATA3_0~3 in RAID mode.  This appears to be how Gigabyte implements RAID on the SB950.   If you have BIOS version F1...  I suggest updating to F2 or later.  RAID BIOS was updated and you are running large disks. 

Whatever you decide, please don't think that the parity drive in the RAID 5 is an excuse not to implement a back up strategy.   ;)

Hey shadowsports,

Thanks for replying. What you said seems to be what I imagined the situation would be.

I've got no problems with the loss of my CD/DVD drive. I've actually already unplugged it to be able to test all the HDDs currently without the fuss of having to go back in connect the SATA cables.

With that being said, you mentioned that I lose 1 stand alone port for the Sata 0-3 in RAID mode...does this mean that I can't have a 4 disk Raid 5 setup, SATA 0 through 3 (I know one drive is used for the parity table and should not be factored into the final RAID volume size)? If so, that's unfortunate, and incredibly limiting, and I will then probably look into acquiring a raid controller instead of using the limited on board controller.

Haha, yes, I'm in the process of setting up an external backup system, that I will eventually take offsite somewhere.

You are welcome to use the additional port for a RAID 5 member.  This was before I knew you were ok with not having a CD/DVD connected.

Ahh, all is well in the world. Thank you for all the advice and support. I'll open up the case and follow the instructions sometime this week. I'll hopefully report back in regards to how it went.

So I finally got around to popping open the case and connecting the correct drives to the appropriate SATA ports.

I'll outline what I did in case someone else is going through a similar setup process.


After connecting the 4 drives I'm using in RAID 5 to ports 0, 1, 2, and 3, I went into the BIOS after boot up by pressing DEL. There, I went into the peripherals tab, and set the "SATA Type" to "RAID", and the "SATA Port4/5" to "IDE". Note that I wanted 4 of my 6 drives in RAID 5, 1 SSD for the OS, and a standalone drive for random stuff, as the RAID 5 is simply going to be for my media. (Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if AHCI is an option on ports 4/5. I can either set it to IDE, or set it to "as SATA Type", which essentially throws it into the same category as whatever you have "SATA Type" set to - in my case, RAID).
I'm on a Windows 7 machine, so that was all I needed to do. Saved and exited, and the computer rebooted.

Was prompted with an initial screen to access the RAID controller setup, but realised I didn't install the RAID drivers.

Downloaded them from the website, extracted them to desktop, opened up device manager and located my RAID controller. This wasn't hard as it had a glaring yellow exclamation mark next to it. Right clicked, clicked update driver, browsed locally to the folder/location where I extracted the drivers, and all was well. Rebooted, and went into the RAID controller setup page.

From there, I followed the steps to create a logical volume (I believe I pressed 2 and followed what was written). Set it to RAID 5, and given that this was going to be for media files, I increased the stripe block to as large as possible (256KB is the max, unfortunately), same with the sector size. Left the read policy to "read ahead", and wasn't able to change the write policy, which defaulted to "write back".
With those settings, I finalised everything, gave the array a name, and rebooted to Windows.

From there, I went to Disk Management and the RAID array was recognised. Went through the steps of adding it/formatting it (GPT as I will be having large files on this partition, although I don't think many people even use MBR anymore?).

Next came the testing using CrystalDiskMark and a trial version of HD Tune Pro. Note that I've tested these individual hard drives initially before setting up the RAID array. All worked well, although one drive did have an "End to End Error Detection" warning [98 98 99 2]. I tested this drive a few times more than the rest, and it seemed fine without any problems. This is SMART afterall, and I am attributing this to an event possibly in the past that's logged. I'll monitor it, and see what happens, as I believe the warranty is expired on that particular drive. This may also mean that I'll have to figure out an optimal backup solution quicker than expected, just in case.



Haven't done much reading in regards to what the benchmark figures should be, but I will look into them in the next couple of days when I've got more time. From what I could tell with my limited knowledge, the figures look within reason. If anyone has any input, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Something to note, and not sure why this is the case, but HD Tune Pro doesn't allow me to benchmark writing, as it doesn't recognise my RAID array as a drive, but sees it as the default "AMD 3+1 Disk RAID 5" setup/Logical Array? Not sure why this is the case, but alas, no writing benchmarks from HD Tune.

So that is where things stand. I'll post back here with any significant changes/issues, but I don't foresee any. Hopefully.
