G1.Sniper Z170 wont keep fan settings
« on: October 03, 2015, 10:17:26 pm »
When i set a custom fan curve in System Information Viewer Smart Fan Advanced, the settings reset every time i reboot. I have to manually set the fan speeds every time i turn on my pc ! In the old SIV versions, there was a "Retain Smart Fan setting on reboot" button, but it is nowhere to be found. I am on Windows 10. Please help.

Hey Guys,

Sandermand..
What settings are you using in BIOS for Fan Control? (page 26-27 of manual)  Did this work previously and now it doesn't after app upgrade?

It doesnt matter what settings i set for the fan in BIOS. I tried Silent, Normal, Full Speed and Manual. This never worked, as i just got the board and assembled the computer yesterday.

I also found this thread where people are reporting similar issues back on z97 boards: http://www.overclock.net/t/1507050/warning-gigabyte-isn-t-offering-any-fan-control-anymore-z87-z97/80

But none of the suggestions have worked and Gigabyte even had the nerve to respond in the thread with: "Thats the ways its designed to work, live with it." Which makes no sense, because Asus Fan Xpert remembers settings fine. And i cant use software like Speedfan to control fans, because no software can read the Z170 Chipset PWM fan controllers yet.

I look through the whole thread and can't fine where Gigabyte reply to the thread.

There is no help for windows 10.  ;) I know you are having a problem, but you are running windows 10 on a new motherboard. You pointed out that you were not having any problems with the last version.

I have to install it and play around with it to see what is going on. I do have windows 10 install on the computer. I don't really like windows 10. But I have to have install and trying it. "Microsoft Partner"

Plus I'll install it on windows 7 to just to see if there is a difference.

My experience.  App Center and SIV installed on my Z97 running 8.1.  If I set a custom fan curve it holds across a reboot.  I'll bet this is 10  ;)  May have to be patient until its resolved.  Oh wait.....  There is the setting... ?

Im sorry i misspoke. One of the people in the thread raised a ticket with Gigabyte and posted the response in the thread.
Also, i just had the same thought as you so i went ahead and installed win 8.1 on a spare drive. No difference with the newest version from the driver page.

My experience.  App Center and SIV installed on my Z97 running 8.1.  If I set a custom fan curve it holds across a reboot.  I'll bet this is 10  ;)  May have to be patient until its resolved.  Oh wait.....  There is the setting... ?

I just tried on 8.1, same problem. This is a SIV on Z170 problem no doubt. And whats that about the setting ?

Yeah thats not the setting im talking about. Thats just the setting to open App Center automaticcaly. Inside the old versions of SIV settings (not App Center settings, as shown in your picture), there was a setting called "Retain Smart Fan settings on reboot". I dug around in the win 10 registry and found the setting in there and it IS turned on by default. Its just not working.

To everyone, i also found out something new. With the Gigabyte Updater in App Center i got a prompt to download a new version of SIV. The version is B15.0825.1. Thats a newer version than the one one the driver page for my card, which was only B15.811.1. Once i downloaded the update, SIV remebered the setting when rebooting ! But ONLY if i open SIV when i have rebooted. If i dont do anything the fans spin like mad, even though App Center is running in the tray. The second i open up SIV, my profile gets applied. So i got one step closer to getting it to remember across reboots. I made a Task Schedule for opening it every time i log in, but its still a crap solution :/

That program is unless just like t's on a witch. I have tried everything and it will not keep any settings at all. So if you never reboot the computer you be will fine. But that isn't the point here. Yes you like them and yes you do have some good complains about it too.

This just me, I don't like or use any of those unless programs out there. I have been building computers for 20 yrs and been using them for almost 35 yrs. Most of those programs will only drive you crazies. When they don't work or tell you something you don't like or see.

One other thing is that I'll have to look at the book and see if there is something in the bios you have to set or have the latest bios for them to work. Plus I can't tell you how it work with a older version because again I never used them.

Try what i did and run the Gigabyte Updater from the App Center and download the newer version of SIV B015.825.1 and see if you have any luck getting it to remember the settings. Just remeber that you might have to open SIV every time, but at least its progress that you dont have to set everything every time.

And yes, i would use Speedfan like i did on my old Z77X-UD3H board, but no software recognizes the Z170 chipset yet, so im stuck with SIV :/

I think i figured it out. Turns out the problem was the PWM splitter on the back of my Phanteks Enthoo Pro case. It was messing up the fan speeds. When i plugged the fans into the motherboard directly, it applied my profile with no problem.
