Motherboard Can't Handle It

Motherboard Can't Handle It
« on: July 21, 2010, 05:51:13 pm »
Building a PC using spares laying around. Using GA-EP45T-UD3LR cannot drive a ATI Radeon 4870X2.( No, its not a power supply issue and a vanilla single core 4870 works fine.) I think it has something to do with having only a 4 pin instead of the 8 pin motherboard power input connector. Could someone shed some light on this and suggest the best graphics accellerator I could use with this motherboard.

You say it's not a power issue but to clarify things you have installed both aux power cables in to the graphics card haven't you?
I can't see why the EATX 12v connection for the CPU would have any bearing on the graphics card.
What make and model of PSU are you running?

Its a power supply issue.

Cooler Master UCP-900W & Antec 850 TPQ were tested with same results. These PSUs work fine in other system. I think this 4 pin input may very well be used elsewhere on the motherboard but obviously, I do not have schematics in front of me.

Ok we'll agree that the PSU is not the problem but what 4 pin connection are you talking about? Do you have a connection between the PSU and the motherboard that is 4 pin (black and yellow cables) just to the top left of the CPU socket? If not you should have.

Blood from a stone for you not posting it before thanks. :P

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

The 4 pin for the CPU not being a 8 pin has nothing to do with the graphics card what so ever.

I am not sure from what Albatross said whether he has even got it plugged in at all.

Yes, it is the "CPU" connector w/ black and yellow wires. You know I may have a bad 4870X2 on my hands. Since I have another 4870X2 in another system I will swap them out.

Peteruc it is plugged in.

Yes good idea. As long as you are sure that the other one is good.
