CPU fan @ 6000rpm on Phenom 955 X4 ???

I've just put my new rig together and fired it up.

Was doing the Windows Experience Index and the CPU fan was wailing like a banshee and hitting 6000rpm. It's the stock AVC Heatsink/Fan combo that came with the Phenom II X4 955BE. The AVC website quotes a max RPM of 4500 @ 44.5dB.

Now it was a hot day here today, ambient temperature of 38C, and the CPU cores were getting into the mid 50's under load, but I'm wondering how long this fan will last at those RPM's. It sounded like a turbo-prop plane at takeoff.  

The fan is a little 70mm job. Should I look for a replacement fan, or just go for a reasonable after market cooler.

PS: It's cooled down here now and the CPU cores are 37C and the fan a quiet 2550rpm

Hi there,

The AMD Stock coolers are very loud and not very efficient. I swapped mine for a Noctua NH-D14 and saw the temperatures drop quite remarkably.

Depending on your budget I would advise you to go for a good after market cooler and there are plenty of choices. If you want Air cooling then Noctua make some pretty good ones. The Corsair H70 is also a good choice if you want the middle ground of a pre-built water cooling option.

I've done a heap of research online and the Noctua seems very well regarded. The NH-U9B SE2 seems to suit my Midi case and gives about twice the heatsink area and two 90mm fans as opposed to the single 70mm on the standard rig. And they have a very compreghensive website with all the compatibility charts you need. The NH-C12P SE14 will also fit.

Most of the units I looked at were around 170mm high from the base and meant those with top mounted fans were hard up against the side of the case.
