Motherboard question

Hi, i have a Gigabyte GA-VM900M motherboard with a VIA P4 M900 + VT8237AA Chipset. (old model? I know)

2xPCI, 1xAGP v3.5 , 1xPCI Express x1, 1xPCI Express x16

The motherboard has a built-in 64MB video card VIA/S3 Chrome9.

What i would like to know is, if the 64MB built in video card would get fried would the motherboard still work with a new PCI/PCI-E/AGP video display card or the entire motherboard would be compromised?

Hi

Normally the onboard graphics has to be disabled anyway in favour of a dedicated graphics card if one is to be installed. Sometimes this is done automatically but either way it shouldn't impact on you installing a seperate GPU. Is there any reason why you ask as it seems a funny question to even consider if it is working now?

My 256MB NVIDIA display card got fried last week, and my computer is now working on it's 64mb built in card. Now the weird thing is that before my 256 card dies on me, the screen sometimes turned black for a few seconds (sign that the video card is on it's last breath) but once i removed it everything was ok. Now after 1 week from then, i encountered that again, so i just wanted to know if something goes bad with the built in card, a new display card can take it's place withowt me needing to buy a new motherboard, i cannot afford both a new motherboard and a video card only one of them. (asking this now since at service they said nothing was wrong)

Last time i installed my 256MB card the 64 one got disabled automatically might be the same once i get a new one.

You're welcome and there is no reason for there to be any problem with adding a new card. Are you sure that the other GPU was fried? It couldn't just have been a case of the PSU getting old and failing could it?

PSU? O.o The video card was not fried it was malfunctioning, everytime i turned on my pc i had to push the restart button several times before the computer made a bip and actually started. Eveytime i was viewing a youtube video that was higher then 240 or in FS the computer froze and restarted itself.

No 3d application would work with it anymore, so i got it out. The video card had no built-in fan and was overheating itself to fast.
I had it from my uncle after he upgraded to a better one, and his kids were hard core gamers, it stil worked for me for 2 years so i'm not complaining

I just wanted to be sure i don't need a new motherboard and that if i get a new 512 display card i won't have problems if the mainboard card is dead.

I really wouldn't think so. Just because your GPU went faulty there is no reason the think that a new graphics card wouldn't work.
