EX58-UD5 + G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (x3) Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

I currently have OCZ3G1600LV6GK x3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365) in my EX58-UD5. I have never been able to really get these to run at 1600 and overclock. Right now running at 3.78 and 1066. I blame my lack of research into these and a lack of support from OCZ for never being able to fully utilize these as they were advertised.

So these are on sale today: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314&Tpk=F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL)

Before I run into the same issues as before with the OCZ3G1600LV6GK (X3)... need to know what my chances are of being able to overclock these G.Skill modules and run at the full 1600. Also thinking of getting 3 sets to fill the EX58-UD5.

Couple other bits of info:

F12 BIOS
V8 Cooler
i7 920 (D0)
HAF 932
Nvidia 460

Hi

Your first problem would be that they are sold in Dual Channel kits and so are not really compatible with a triple channel motherboard. It is possible that you might strike lucky and get them to work together but it is a longshot.

You really need to look for at least a triple channel kit or ideally a kit of six matching modules that are guaranteed to work together.

Thanks and had not thought about that aspect. Just assumed they would be OK. I will pass on them and wait. I do not want a repeat of the issues with the OCZ3G1600LV6GK modules. Those have been a major disappointment.

I would say that is the sensible thing to do. We al like to grab a bargain when we see them but sometimes it isn't as cheap as we think.

What is wrong with your OCZ ram ? I am not a lover of OCZ nowadays but maybe we could get it to work.

I agree and just deleted the items from my basket. I have never been able to get the existing OCZ Gold (OCZ3G1600LV6GK) to run as advertised. I believe them to have been on the approved memory for the EX58-UD5 per GB but when you attempt to run them at 1600MHz and overclock, the system will not start or you get BSOD's or multi-reboot cycles. I have tried every know BIOS config out there to get them running at 1600MHz overclocked to no avail. Spent countless hours changing every setting in the BIOS per Overclock forums with no luck. With the D0 i7920 I would think getting to 4GHz would have been a given especially with a pretty hefty cooler and more fans than most cases can provide. I have tried all the BIOS versions from F8 - F13t and can only push one or the other (memory or CPU) but not both. Any suggestions appreciated.

I understand now then. Yes the overclock normally is held back by memory limitations. If you have already tried all the usual settings in the BIOS to help then there is probably little I can do to help then.

Personally I would suggest Corsair Dominators for your board or Crucial do some nice modules too.

Thanks. I just looked at the Dominator series... considerably more money than the G.Skill's but I guess that's to be expected if they provide the performance on the EX58 series.

Which of the Crucial series are recommended for my board?

If you go on Crucial's website they have a memory finder where you can input your motherboard and it will match up all the suitable memory.

Dark Mantis - Thanks. Checked out the site and I think at this point I am going to hold off until the 3x4GB prices come down. There were some 3x4GB modules on sale on Newegg but with no way to guarantee that they will work at advertised speeds and overclock I am reluctant to pull the trigger.

You will be fine using 3 x Dual Channel kits to run in Triple Channel. I do that all the time. The modules are no different, and the prices for 2x4GB kits are cheaper per module vs 3x4GB kits.

My experience with OCZ memory however, is that they don't overclock well, even per spec. Thos G.Skills are what I use quite often. You can find a good review here: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/gskill_ddr3_1600_8gb/3.htm
