Recovering Lost DRAM size

Recovering Lost DRAM size
« on: April 29, 2011, 11:15:08 am »
Hi there, I have just bought a GN X58-USB3 motherboard and am having some problems.  When the pc is booted up I get an error message saying recovering lost DRAM size and the PC reboots.  I am using 3 sticks of 4gb Corsair Vengance RAM, and when the bios posts it only shows 8gb.  I have flahsed the bios to the latest version (F3) and it is still doing the same.  I have tried various fixes, and have set the timings manually to 9,9,9,24 and have set the volatge to 1.7, however the problem is still occuring.  Could anyone help me please?

Thanks

Mark

Hi

Well there are normally two reasons why the reported amount of memory would be less than the actual amount of installed RAM. They are if the CPU socket has bent pins or the settings are out for the memory.

Check your QPI/Vtt setting and see what it is currently at. It changes dependant on the CPU, memory and other factors so there is no hard and fast rule about how much it should be set to but normally between 1.2v and 1.4v will be right. Your memory voltage of 17v is too high for 3 modules and should be set to 1.66v which will probably give a 1.64v real output.

Post back with your results please.

Hello mate, well I removed the cpu to check for bent pins and there was none.  Everything looked fine so I reseated the cpu and rebooted.  This time it saw all 12 gb of ram and seems to work perfectly.  I cant explain why this time it works and before it didnt, but can I just thank you for your fast response and help :D

My mem voltage is still set to 1.7 as thats what I read it should be on another forum.  Should I drop it to 1.66 as you recommended?

Thanks again!!!!

It works now because one or more of your pins are slightly bent and just removing and reseating the CPU has made them make contact. Anyway the job did the trick. Did you clean off the paste and apply fresh before fitting the heatsink again ?

The memory voltage doesn't need to be that high for three sticks of memory. If you filled all the banks that would be different. I would return the voltage to 1.66v. You can always up it if you have trouble.
