Windows 7-64...pro or Ultimate ?
« on: May 24, 2011, 10:09:48 am »

 Hi everybody

Sorry for the boring question but my interim install is about to run out, I have to make a decision between windows 7-64bit Professional and Ultimate.

these are the two that will support more then 18 GB of memory for my photo-editing.....my question is,    "what will the Ultimate version give me over the Pro version"........there's only £30 the difference, but £30 is £30.

Hi Allan,

save your £30 and go for the Pro version. I am running Ultimate but I needed the Japanese Language Pack/GUI for my wife. I think you will find that is the only advantage of the Ultimate over the Professional. Now, if I could only read all these Windows menus in Japanese I would be a very clever idiot.

As for other "Added Extra" Bit locker, I actually disable this feature as I don't need it and, from what I have read, it can cause some major recovery issues if your HDD runs into trouble.

It's the usual Microsoft hype when it comes to these two versions of 7. The Ultimate is really not necessary unless you need the extra bells and whistles. As I said, being able to have the OS in Japanese is great for my wife and, if you are sharing a PC with someone who's native tongue is not English then this option is really good.

However, with hindsight, I would have gone for the Pro version as my wife never uses the main PC ( I won't let her near it) and when something goes wrong and you have to try and escape from the OS which is running in a different language, it can be really difficult.  :o  Mind you, it does look good when I have visitors and they see me  :P running Windows in Japanese!

Windows 7-64...pro or Ultimate?

My answer is neither!

Wait until early 2012 and get "Windows Not Sure of the Name Yet!"

Allan, Steve Ballmer announced yesterday that Windows 8 will be released in 2012...shortly afterwards the offical spokeswoman for Microsoft said he made a big boo-boo, and that Microsoft still hasn't decided what to call their new OS.

Here's the article:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2385795,00.asp

Regarding Windows 7 Ultimate, I have it on each of my computers but as AB and DM mentioned, if you do not need the language pack or special encription, you probably will not need it.

Up, up, and away!

Haha.

Yeah pro is definitely the way to go, I get free copies from my MSDNAA access and I haven't noticed anything different from 7 ultimate which is on my server. Put the £30 towards something that is actually useful  ;)

Allan,

If you are currently enrolled in a university class, Windows 7 Pro is only $29.99.

I have friends that simply enroll in a college class, obtain their .edu email address, and then they qualify [Microsoft does not say you must complete the course].  Most of these people will then drop the college course immediately after receiving their $29.99 copy of Windows 7 Professional.

Totally legal, but perhaps not so honest....hmmmmmm....

Anyway, not sure if it works in the British Isles...

Here's the USA URL: http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/office/default.aspx

Here's the Brit version: http://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/studentoffer/ [requires a legit .AC.UK email address].

Hope this helps!

And if you do go this route, I hope your nose does not begin to grow real long like Pinocchio.

Thanks for that, I DID have a little look at this path over here, but the Educational website OS is an Upgrade type install only, for many reasons I need the clean install disc.......but with these links I'll have a fresh look.......thanks for the thought and your time.

You are most welcome Allan!  Here in the USA, I am constantly taking university classes, so I do qualify for the "Ultimate Steal."  Since I serve as a teacher, I must constantly be taking university classes for professional growth purposes.  I tried it a couple of times and was surprised they sent me the full retail version of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  One of the best deals they offered in the past was the Office 2007 Ultimate for $79.  At the time, it retailed for over $700.

Yes, I understand about the full version for the clean install.  I hope you can find a good deal on one!
