GA-P55A-UD3 Intel RAID5 performance Issue
« on: July 14, 2011, 10:56:05 am »
Hi guys

I have a GA-P55A-UD3 rev2 board with F11 BIOS. I'm running W7 Pro x64, i7 860, 12Gb RAM.
I've just set up a RAID5 array using 3 WD Caviar Green 2TB drives. Install was easy enough, enable in the BIOS, accepted all defaults.
In Windows, I formatted the partition as a simple volume, and have a 3.63TB drive available in Windows Explorer.

I'm now copying 1.7TB of data on to this drive. However I'm only getting write speeds of 8.6MB/sec. Obviously this is a lot less than I was expecting.

Any pointers on improving the performance of this?

Thanks

Hi

Well your biggest mistake was using the "Green" drives for the RAID array. These are not designed for use as such and are aimed towards energy saving not performance. You would have been better off using the Western Digital Blacks for the RAID.

I think that is a RAID 5 construction problem

You have programmed not quick but full mode or you have make a force computer reset / reboot and RAID is in reconstruction mode

Thanks Pierre. Is there anyway I can test this?

I don't know how the RAID construction could have been interrupted. What I did was:

Enter the bios, change from AHCI to RAID (I can't remember what the setting was called).
Exit BIOS, press Ctl + I when prompted.
Select the 3 drives, save changes and exit.
In Windows, the drive was available immediately, so I formatted it as a simple volume in the Disk Manager.
I then started copying the files as soon as the format was complete.

Thanks
