Upgrading GA-MA790X-UD4P to 8gb ram. Need advice!
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:34:04 am »
Hello,

I am going to add another Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX kit to my GA-MA790X-UD4P motherboard to kick it up to 8gb ram.  I need advice as to what kind of bios tweaks I need to make. Right now my settings are normal. Please advise. Thank you!

Hi there,

Quite often, when upgrading RAM, it is really a case of suck it and see, I'm afraid. If the RAM you are going to add is the same speed as your existing modules then you shouldn't really need to make any changes to the BIOS.

If it is of a faster speed then it will be pulled back to match the slowest speed. If it is slower, than your existing RAM will be slowed down to match.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

You may well find that you will need to increase the DRAM voltage a touch if you fill all memory slots.

Thanks for the reply's. I am well aware about memory speeds.  That's not my concern because I putting in the same memory kit. My concern was do I need to increase any other voltages other than the memory?

   MerReady

As DM and Absic state....."No changes should be required upgrading to 8Gb of the same  Memory" A possible DRAM Voltage increase may possibly be required for stability under load .........but unlikely!...........Plug em in and enjoy.

My son brought his 790 FXT board over for a cooler instalation.
He had 4 gig of ram installed. I had another 4 gig of the same ram from a previous build.
I installed it and fired up the pc.No problems at all.  ;)

You should be good to go.

DDR2 RAM does seem to be a little more forgiving than DDR3 when it comes to increasing the amount you are using.  ::)
