GA-EP45-DS5: unable access BIOS after gfx upgrade
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:31:47 pm »
Hi All,

Recently I've upgraded graphic card from Gainward Geforce 9800GT to Gigabyte Geforce GTX 560 ti OC on Gigabyte moterboard GA-EP45-DS5 (rev1, F13a).

Everything runs smoothly except small thing: I am not able to access BIOS. After hitting DEL during boot up getting message "preparing enter setup" etc as normal, receiving post messages about ahci controller and loading BIOS stops at blinking cursor and empty black screen.

Switching back to old graphic card - no issues, BIOS loads perfectly.

Any clues?

regards,
tan

Welcome Tan.....sorry you had to wait so long

I would suggest a full BIOS reset.....with the new card installed.........once you reboot.......go into bios and load "Optimized Defaults save and reboot ..........go into BIOS yet again and configure your system for your hardware.....ie 32 bit / 64 bit ext......save and reboot back to windows.......this should fix the error.

Hi

The next thing to try is to clear the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Hi Aussie Allan, Dark Mantis,

Big thanks for advice. Clearing cmos didn't help, but found other solution - downgraded motherboard bios to F12. Seems fine for now.

tan

Unfortunately yes, it was beta, downloaded from official gigabyte site. No issues when used with old graphic, has been running on it for almost two years.

This beta advantage was AHCI bios in version 1.20 - booting and scanning sata devices is much more quicker than non-beta bios which runs AHCI bios version 1.07.
