Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P - Loading Operating System. Reboot.
« on: November 12, 2011, 09:23:42 am »
Alright I don't know if I got a faulty motherboard, I've tried many things including: Swapping Ram, Changing BIOS settings, and a clean install of Win7 x2.

What Happens: Windows goes into POST and says, "Loading Operating System..."
A few seconds later it would boot back to Gigabyte's load screen.

This is a newly built device, I haven't gotten to my desktop yet.
Every part inside my PC is recognized by the MOBO's BIOS.
DVD Drive boots up fine and can boot CDs/DVDs fine.
Sata drive has windows installed on it. When I tried to browse through it (through win7 cd),  I can access my desktop, documents etc.

Don't know what's wrong with it. I'm guessing it's a bad motherboard. But the fact that it can run past post when installing Win7 is throwing me off. Am I missing something? Any ideas?

Specs: i5 2500k Intel Processor.
Sapphire Radeon 6850 (Not plugged in)
GA-Z68XP-UD3P Motherboard.
16gb (4 x4GB Ram) Corsair Vengeance DDR3.
Rosewill Wireless Adapter.
Seagate Baracudda SATA 7200 RPM.
Hitachi DVD+- Burner.
Corsair CX500 PSU.

  Welcome smanaloto

Some things you missed that I'll have to assume.

You said it will boot up to "Loading OS" ......so you have loaded the OS and I assume you had no problems.....did you load under ACHI or IDE.....is this the configure in BIOS still being used ?

VGA not connected ..... Have you configured in BIOS to us the on board Graphics ?

If you have not loaded the OS then I think you have an old OS install on the disc and it's seeing the MBR (Master boot record) causing a conflict.

  can you give more information?

Using an HDMI set up; it's set to on board graphics card.
Yes, I loaded the OS no problem and the drive is set to IDE.

Problem is persisting: Loading operating system..
It would load, I won't see "Windows is starting up", it just brings me back to Gigabyte's start up screen.

Is it the power supply? I'm reluctant to agree, the graphics card isn't even plugged in. I don't see why 500 watts wouldn't be able to supply power throughout the computer.

Hi smanaloto, ;)

You write:

Seagate Baracudda SATA 7200 RPM.
Yes, I loaded the OS no problem and the drive is set to IDE.

I think you want to use the SATA drive in AHCI mode.
Have you tried to make changes to the bios?
As to enable the options:
AHCI SATA RAID AHCI Mode
Onboard SATA / IDE Device Enabled
Onboard SATA / IDE Ctrl Mode AHCI

Check your Hard Disk Boot Priority in Bios.
Sometimes priorities are changed, especially after a CMOS clear, a hang or other problems occurred related to hard drives.

Hi,

It may not be the power supply, but normally a PSU of at least 650w is best.

How many beeps are there....1...2....etc?

IF the PSU is good..... with no external  GPU......yes it should be fine ...... before we get serious......pull the Rosewill Wireless Adapter and any other HDDs so you just have the SSD.....boot to BIOS and load "Optimized Defaults"......F10/save and reboot back to BIOS to reconfigure.....F10 again then try to boot through to windows......

  Report back with your findings.

Sorry I did set it to IDE but only after I tried to make it work with ACHI with the same results. I also don't hear any beeps.
I tried this all last night and going for a second round of trouble shooting.

Trying to turn it on, and it's dying out after 15 seconds.
Tried a known good cable, switched outlets, no luck. Bad PSU?
Sigh.

Hi,

No beeps chap....have you not got a motherboard buzzer like this:

http://www.pcpartscollection.com/mosp.html

If not you should be able to buy one from your local PC store or from New Egg, you need to have one......it helps to trouble shoot....but you know that. ;)

UPDATE

Don't worry....look at the positive aspect you have identified a faulty component and you now need to choose another....here this may help you:

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

I don't know if you have seen this before but it might help you.....have a break and post back if you need some help in choosing a PSU. Absic, Aussie Allan and DM.....and others will give you some good advice if you require it.

Hope this helps

Sigh!.... you could be right ..... unfortunately even with an ohmmeter......all it will tell you is what volts......not how it pumps under load and this is the usual result of a crook PSU......to save a possible outlay.....is there another system you could try to power up with the suspect ?

If you were hearing beeps before and not now it's probably Power supply.....But as the PC god wouldn't have it any other way!  "it still could be the Board" ;)

Hi,

If you can't do what Aussie Allan has just suggested take both PSU and / or MB to a PC store to be tested if you don't have the eguipment do so....but they will charge of course. This way you may find the cause.

Hi AA, teknology9 and smanaloto ,  8)

Fun to see that many of us try to find solutions.
But less fun when it does not work.

I wonder if it would be better to just disconnect all the hardware.
And to a minimum mounting hardware on a cardboard box cut to the ground or on a table. Not in the case.

Try with only one memory stick. Not All.
If an error occurs try it in a different slot on the motherboard.

Have you really this psu?
http://www.corsair.com/power-supply-units/builder-series/builder-series-cx500-v2-80plus-certified-power-supply.html?___store=en&___from_store=en

EDIT01 :
Have you tried this test?
Disconnect everything from your PSU except for one single fan that should be connected directly to one of the Molex connectors. Then, get a small piece of wire, paper clip, or suitable object and short the green pin and a black pin on the 24-pin connector on the power supply. The voltage present is a very low signaling voltage so no worries of being shocked. Your PSUs fan should spin along with the fan you have connected to it. If this is the case, your PSU may not be receiving the power on signal from your motherboard and you should consider other causes of the problem you’re having.

EDIT02 :
Did you check the battery on the motherboard?

Some of the other things that I noticed when I was trying to figure things out were:

When I plugged in a USB drive to try to update the bios, the system powered off.
My case fan which came with the case was powering on earlier. Now it won't turn on; but the case fan that was connected to the motherboard does. But dies out in about 10-15 seconds.

And as per the beeps. I've never heard them to begin with =/. But then again I don't have a motherboard speaker.
Thanks for all the help so far; I don't have another machine to test out the PSU unfortunately.

I'll buy a different one, return this one and go from there.
I'll come back if I'm still having problems with the board.

Hi, how are you doing Gloupster?

I came across this article which you may find useful:

Again, I don't know how much you know but it may help......and that's what the forum is all about.

As Aussie Allan has stated find what cause is before any outlay....as $ don't grow on trees!!!! ;)

Or ask a friend / work colleague. If you do pay for testing naturally it doesn't mean you have to buy the component/s from that store.
