X58A-UD3R - can't use more than 3 sticks of RAM, memtest fail...

Another problem with X58A-UD3R_rev2.0 and i7-980X:

I have 6 sticks of Corsair CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 memory. Each stick works fine individually and passes the Memtest, but when i install 4 or 6 sticks (in the right slots according to the manual) - i get random restarts freezes and Memtest errors. In 1333Mhz it's a total nightmare - freezes all over the place, and in 1066Mhz when the system boots it seems to work, but 8 out of 10 boots i get black screen right after BIOS and before the OS starts loading.

Tried updating and resetting BIOS, replacing the memory with Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G, removing all PCI cards, replacing the ATI 5770 with ATI 5450, but nothing helps... Is there a way to diagnose the RAM slots or something? Is there anything else i can do?

Glancing a little into your issue raised a few questions from me.

First off. Corsair Memory — 4GB DDR3 Memory (CMV4GX3M1A1333C9). It comes in a 4 pack. Where did you get 2 extra to make 6?

Secondly. Did you look at your motherboard's recommended RAM list before purchasing the RAM?

So you are right with your number of stick of ram.
I imagine you place 4 sticks on Dual Channel. And 6 sticks on 3 Channel...

Probably a mistake. Correct me if possible ... but I think it's 4x1GB.

If you mix a sticks ram, with different brands  and model, you have many possibility to have problem.
By exemple, if a ram have a number of chips different. Or model of chip like 256M x 8-bit.

You find normal this price for a 1x4Gb module.  Or so, the price is mistake.

I didn't mix them, i have 6 identical Corsair sticks (4GB each one) and 4 Kingston sticks (also 4 GB each), their specs are hyperlinked in first post. Each stick individually seems to be healthy and passes Memtest.

I had no problems with 3X4 setup with both Corsair or Kingston. But when i try to use Corsair in a 4X4 or 6X4 setup, or Kingston in a 4X4 - it doesn't works and everything freezes and crashes. The thing is that i need 24GB, and i'm completely lost...

Okay, because your Corsair Ram are single sided module. And your Kingston Ram are double sided module.
So he is not good idea mix this.

What is your OS? Like Windows 7 64bit x64 for example. Please give more infos about your hardware... PSU, Graphics card, etc....

Have you tried made a change in Bios in MIT section?

I just checked and this Corsair is actually double sided, but i still won't mix them unless necessary.

Here's the tech specs:
CPU: i7-980 Extreme (no overclocking)
Motherboard: (started with BIOS version FF and upgraded to the latest Fh3)
GPU: Gigabyte ATI HD 5770 GV-R577UD-1GD
PSU: Seasonic SS-600ET 600W
HDD: 1X Samsung 502HJ and 2X Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2000GB
OS: Win7Pro64 and a certain distribution of FreeBSD

The only change i made in MIT is set the SPD to 8 in order to run the memory at 1066. Everything else is set by "Load Optimized Settings" defaults.

hen I see your picture (http://i.imgur.com/2VVJV.jpg) it seems to me, that the memory module (computer chips or micro circuit) are only one side of the stick of memory.

In contrast, the stick of Kingston, appears to have electronic circuit (chips) on the TWO (2) side of the stick of ram.

My message is more clear, now? I hope...

Okay now is clear. Your Ram have double sided circuit.

So I think the best is the remove paper on the Ram.
For the heat is dissipated better.

This is just a suggestion.

What? It doesn't generates any noticeable heat, and I'm afraid this unnecessary paper removal may also void warranty.
However, the Kingston ones don't have those paper stickers - and they still don't work when i install more than 3 of them.

From what I understand, you have 6 DIMM RAM occupying 6 of your RAM slots?

When trouble shooting the problem for my motherboard which is newer than yours. I found out that I could only have 3 out of the 4 double-sided RAM sticks I purchased.

From what I've been told. You can only use all 6 RAM slots if your RAM sticks are SIMM (ie. chips on one side only). Since your RAM sticks are DIMMs (dual-sided), you can only have 3.

Meaning, if you want 24GB of memory. You're going to have wait to purchase 8 GB RAM sticks I'm afraid.

This is why when you put more than 3 DIMMs in your RAM slots, your PC goes on the fritz.
