Gigabyte On/Off charge help
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:25:53 pm »
Hi, I have a P55a-UD4 rev1.0 board and am not sure if Gigabyte On/Off charge is supported at all.

The user manual mentions this functionality and I've installed the required driver but when I'm in S3 mode and plug my phone to a USB port it will just wake up the PC. When PC is OFF then there's no charging.

Does anyone have any experience with this mobo/rev combo in regards to On/Off charge?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

Is your motherboard header coloured RED as that is the one you will need to use for this. The others won't work.

Hi,

no none of the USB headers are red. Just plain blue.

But I have made a test since - plugged in the phone while PC was on, then entered S3 and voila the phone was still charging! Then I powered off the PC and same thing!

Now I'm not sure if this is the making of the OOC driver that I've installed or if it's always been like that and it just never occured to me to test, lol. :D

This was enabled on older boards by a BIOS update when it was brought in on the newer boards. That is why yours hasn't got the RED header.

OK I see.

Now the only thing that does not work in this regard is plugging the phone in while the PC is powered off. It does not charge in this case.

Should it start charging then or this is not supported even on rev2.0 dedicated OOC boards?

From what I can see it is only the newer boards with the dedicated header that support the charging while in an off state or S4/5 mode.

hi there,

looking at the Overview page for this motherboard it states:
*Due to certain mobile phone limitations, users may need to connect the mobile phone to their PC before the PC enters S4/S5 mode to enable a quick charge from non On/Off Charge USB ports. Charging results may vary by model.

This may explain what's happening in your situation.

My board supports charging in these states. However the phone needs to be plugged in and charging before I power the PC off or put it to sleep mode.

So I was wondering if the dedicated boards do not have this particular requirement.

Yes I've seen this but it doesn't mantion OFF state, only S3/S4 ones.

yes but it does say: "before the PC enters S4/S5 State"
To me, this implies that the phone has to be connected before you shutdown the PC for it to charge and it won't work if you try to connect it with the PC Off.
It also says  that this applies to non On/Off charge USB Ports which your motherboard has.
