GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 2 second boot loop after system halt
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:51:32 pm »
hello,

this is my first post here and my first GIGABYTE product purchase,
i couldn't find a similar thread anywhere else here that fits my current problem and not sure where to turn right now.

my system:

mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
ram: Corsair vengeance 8GB 2x4GB
cpu: intel i5 2500k
psu: Corsair CX600 600w builder series v2
cpu cooler: hyper 212 plus
graphics card: Gigabyte Radeon 6850

problem: it seems the system halted, monitor wasnt recieving picture and a static hiss came through my audio set-up,
wouldnt shutdown with a single or held press of the power button and had to shutdown via psu,
waited a few minutes, turned psu back on and hit power and now just starts up fans and all for a couple seconds (literally) 1..2 then shuts down and restarts, no POST nor not long enough for anything to happen really.
ive only had this mobo up and running for 4 days until fail.
ive tried many things to troubleshoot the problem which includes:
-trying start-up with one stick of ram and swapping ram and no ram
-removing graphics card and switching to on-board vga
-disconnected all cables but the 24 and 8 pin connectors
-removing mobo and testing on the box it came in
-removing cpu and looking for bent or mishaped pins
-removing cpu completly
-psu test with paper clip
-hdd swap
- cmos reset
-all cables and battery removed for 6+ hours

i cant seem to narrow it down and im hoping you guys may have some insight,
i did purchase the 1-year warranty through newegg at purchase of the mobo due to some of the comments posted there
about being stuck in boot loops and other problems but the many good out-weighed the bad so i made the purchase and it did work awesome and i was very pleased up until this happened.

thankyou for taking time to read this i hope ive been thorough! almost forgot to mention its revision 1.3 and F10 bios

Hi and welcome.

This is a known issue and Gigabyte has been working on it. There was a new BIOS released last week that was supposed to have sorted it out. Have you tried it yet ?

Thankyou for the reply and welcome mantis,

And no I have not and I wonder if I am beyond the point of no return in this case..
I'm still surprised it happened at all, everything was working well and booted into os everytime since first install up until the crash the other night (in os) if it weren't for the sound coming across the speakers I wouldn't have noticed at all. Am I looking at an rma or return to newegg here?
Thanks again for the reply.

So you can't boot at all now?   When you cleared the CMOS and had the battery out, did you also press and hold the case power on button for 1-2 minutes?  If not try that again now, shut off PSU via switch, then remove the CMOS battery, then press and hold the case power on button for 1-2 minutes.   Then turn the PSU back on, but leave out the CMOS battery, and see if the board will start.   if it does, load optimized and save/apply/reboot back to the BIOS, once in the BIOS again set your SATA settings and anything else important you know you need to load windows, then boot into windows and shut down.  Then put your CMOS battery back, and boot into the BIOS and set all your other settings back.

Hopefully that will help.   I know clearing CMOS on P67/Z68 is a beast, I think there is onboard ram holding settings because even without the battery the clock and settings will often be saved without an extended clear of the CMOS.

If you can't get it going, then yes you'll need to RMA.   If you still can you should RMA with Newegg, call them up too because if you call and ask nice enough they often will cross-ship to you.

It's worth trying a few times what Lsdmeasap suggested as it has to be timed just right to work and often it is just a case of mistiming.

Or leaving the battery out overnight, with the PSU unplugged, and after you've drained the board via power button.  Sometimes this helps.

If not, you may just have to RMA, sorry to have to suggest that but it sounds like the board might have bit the dust.

Tried it again but still no luck, even with psu plugged in and on I just get a quick spin of the fans and no action after pressing the power button again. I know the board is out of juice now so I'll leave the battery out and try and get some rest here and try again later 5:08am here. If still no luck I'll give newegg a call and get it rma'd.
Thanks a bunch for your replies guys, it's always nice to have a second opinion when you need it most!

Ya, leave it unplugged, disconnected, battery removed, and drained overnight and see if that fixes it.

If not you'll have to send it off, sorry this happened!

Nice to hear Newegg is taking care of you!!   Sorry to hear you had to send the board in though, I know it's a hassle!

Yes, use the latest BIOS always :D
