Did XP install fully and properly?  Do you have the OS drive in SATAII_0?  If not you should move it there, and put your CD/DVD drive into SATAII_3

Did you move the OS drive to the top of the list in Advanced BIOS page, Hard Disk Boot Priority?

When you installed XP, what is the version of XP install disk, SP1 or above?   You have to use SP1 or greater on PCIE based motherboards or it generally will fail to install properly.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS and loading optimized defaults again to see if that helps?  if not try that.

That is the problem then most likely!   You cannot always move an OS from another board, especially if the chipsets are very different.

What motherboard is the XP install from?   You may need to do a clean install.  This is sometimes easier with Vista/Win7 than XP, but depending on what chipsets you move between it's often impossible no matter the OS

Thanks!   That is a move from 965 Chipset to G41, it's too far apart in age as the 965 was MANY years ago (2006).

You will need to do a clean install of XP on the G41 board, or just install windows 7 if you can

In the Advanced BIOS page, in the top setting "Hard Disk Boot Priority" did you move your OS drive to the top of that list?

The OS drive must be at the top of that list.  And for your new clean install, what version is the XP install CD?  If you are not sure, open or mount the ISO or look inside the CD and check the following

Quote
About how to check your disk......

If you can read the hologram on the disc, you can find out if it is SP1 at by seeing if it reads "Version 2002". This indicates it is SP1 but not SP2

You can also mount the disk if you have an ISO Program installed on your system you are using now. Mount the disk, browse to i386 folder and locate the eula.txt file, on the last line you will find one of the following entries and that would also tell you the install disk version

Windows XP Home Retail
EULAID:WX.4_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP1 Home Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP2 Home Retail
EULAID:XPSP2_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP Professional Retail
EULAID:WX.4_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 1 Professional Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 2 Professional Retail
EULAID:XPSP2_RM.0_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 3 Professional Retail
EULAID:XPSP3_RTM_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP Media Center 2005 Retail
EULAID:MCE05_RM.0_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP 64-Bit Retail
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_P64_RTL_EN

Substitute OEM for RTL for OEM versions.

Also, did you burn the disc yourself?  If you did, try burning it again at the slowest speed option, if you didn't before that might cause issues.

OS wont appear, your hard drive will be shown by name, you need to be sure to move it to the top of the list

This is in advanced BIOS page, then inside the top setting on that page called Hard Disk Boot Priority, you have to push enter to go into the next section there and then move the drive to the top of the list.

*edit*

Also, please verify the XP install disc version you are using, because if it's not SP1or later it's not going to work at all.

Tried xp sp1 too. Now just to isolate things further, with the hd disconnected I can get to the windows installation screen (blue) asking me to press enter for a fresh install, but then obviously says no hard drives present and option is F3 to quit.

Thanks!  No need to try SP1 at all, your SP2 disk is what you should be using!

Do you have the OS disk connected to SATAII_0, and CD/DVD connected to SATAII_3?  If not please do, then reboot and check the hard disk boot priority page again to make sure the OS disk is at the top of the list,

Also, please verify these hard drives actually work and do not cause issues on other machines, sometimes a faulty hard drive can cause any number of errors.
