Hi all. I have the G1.Sniper 3 mobo, the CoolerMaster HAF-X case, and the CoolerMaster TPC 812 cpu cooler. When the cpu cooler is installed the backing plate touches the frame of the computer. Is this okay? I suppose I can cut out the frame of the case so it clears the area of the cpu but don't want to do that if it's unnecessary. Here's a pic:

It looks like there's a little space in the pic but it *is* actually touching.

Thanks for any advice,

Hi and welcome.

Don't worry it won't make any difference as long as it has all been fitted properly. It will be at ground potential which is the same as the case so there is no difference. I had the HAF932 a whilke ago and had a similar problem. I did modify the motherboard plate but not for that reason simply to give me better access and availablity to the CPU backing plate for the future.

I don't recognise the backing plate in question though and it doesn't actually look right to me. Are you sure that you have installed it the correct way ?

Thats what i was thinking.

I think the backing plate is reversed in the pic. The "dark" covering on the backing plate should face the mobo. Proects against electrical shorts.

Have a look at the pic. Lots of videos on youtube for installation tips.

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the replies. I wrote to Gigabyte tech support and they said the bracket should not touch the case no matter what. I've now read many forum entries where people said it's not a problem but for warranty reasons I thought I would follow Gigabyte's advice. I got out the trusty Makita and did a little altering and while it's not beautiful to behold I feel better that it's not touching anymore. I'm pretty sure I have the backing plate in right. Here's what the diagram looks like from the installation instructions for the 1155 processor and it definitely shows the brackets angled away from the motherboard:

Here is my handiwork:

My only worry now is I got a bit of metal shavings in the case even though I tried to mask things off. I vacuumed and wiped up so hopefully that won't cause any problems. My son is anxious to get this going!

Thanks again.

As a followup, here are the responses I got:

From Gigabyte:

Answer :   Dear Customer,
It will not work as it will causes for it to short, it cannot be in any contact with the bottom of the case.

From CoolerMaster:

Hi Mr. Adams,
That is normal.  The backplate has anti grounding tape on both sides.  If you have any other questions, please let us know.
