new processor

I've had his motherboard: Gigabyte MA790GP-UD4H with this processor: AMD Phenom II X2 550 for the last three years, and I want to upgrade to this processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1045T. I have the latest BIOS version from Gigabyte and they're both socket AM3.Can I just drop it in and then go to the BIOS setup to adjust stuff? Thanks!

Hi there,

as long as you are running the BIOS version F7c then yes, you should be able to just drop the processor in. When you go into Windows (if you are using that) it will automatically recognise the new CPU and it will probably ask you to restart after it has sorted itself out.

Just to add to what absic has already told you you might want to clear the CMOS and load Optimised BIOS Default settings too. It depends if you are only replacing the processor or other components as well.

Only upgrading the cpu and yes I have BIOS v F7c, but I think I will clear the CMOS and load Optimised BIOS default settings. Good idea. But then I will first go into Windows 7 for a bit and then it will say "restart"? And only then should I go into BIOS settings to make adjustments?

I would do BIOS first as Windows may not ask you to reboot. I only said it might do this as this has happened to me when I swapped CPU's  but it was sometime ago and if it does happen then you won't be surprised.
