ga-78lmt-s2p v3.1 running xp -Problems!
« on: September 06, 2013, 06:22:08 pm »
ga-78lmt-s2p v3.1 -I bought this on internet from a working system...

I have a working xp sp3 disk that works on a single core p4 Intel system but when I transfer it to my ga m/b with the 'fail safe' bios options loaded, it starts & produces the win xp logo, but crashes before my xp desktop screen at the end of the startup screen (the one with the 3 blue dots that move back and forth) after the little dots have been going for about 30 seconds.

Just as a check the disk still works ok afterwards on the p4 intel system.

Is there a crash dump file that'll tell me what's crashing?

BTW, it runs xp safe mode ok.

The processor is amd fx3 4 core, with 4G memory.. let me know what other info needed.

Is there something in the bios settings I can try to allow it to run xp. Any drivers that need to be loaded?

All ideas welcome, I'm stumped!

TIA John

It s ACPI related.
One core is one thing ,2 or more are something else ,so you should try and repair the system using the CD of XP or do a clean install.
Don t forget to install the Cool nQuiet driver under XP.

I recommend W7 for FX CPU-s.
Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

Thanks for quick comments.
Why do you think it is acpi issue?

I'm not sure what to repair- and I don't have the xp installation stuff - just the working xp disk. Gb say the m/b is xp compatible so I hope/guess there is a set of settings that'll work.

What can I try disabling in the bios?  I've enabled the internal vga, disabled audio in case these were issues. I don't need cool'n quiet.  Any other drivers needed? What about hypertransport stuff? Or messing with other settings?

I do plan to install win7, but I'd like to be able to run my working xp disk too.

Forgot to mention that I can run ubuntu 13 from a usb w/o any problems.

Any sources of info apart from this forum?

John

You need "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" stuff to be loaded so the multicore cpu to work properly.
Now you are having the single core CPU loaded as this is the way XP installed on the old config.
If you remake the XP installation the proper ACPI will be loaded. You can repair the XP instalation so it gets everything right ,but you will still have a LOT of leftovers in that OLD install that may generate BSOD-s and such.

So the solution for long term usage is a CLEAN OS install no matter which one.
If you google you will find a lot of users with such problem when going from single core to multicore on a old installation.

If you like Linux you should try OpenSuse as well : Steam support ,DVD support and so on.

I've now checked 'system' and it already has installed the acpi multiprocessor driver installed so guess it is something else. As I mentioned I don't have the install disks so can't repair.

Any more ideas of things to try? Anyone out there running xp on this m/b?

TIA
