GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 and XMP with Ram
« on: December 05, 2012, 02:12:01 pm »
I recently bought GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 Intel X79 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128562 ) and G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231572 )

When I booted the machine, I was presented with constant beeping and no bios post. After some testing, I determined that the RAM in the motherboard were creating an issue. First thing I noticed was that the DIMM slots were incorrectly labeled. I tried one ram in each slot until it booted. When it did, it was in a channel different than one indicated in the manual.

As I added more ram, slowly I was able to get all 4x8 gigs in but only on 2 channels (A + B). If put any ram into Channels C or D, it would beep and never post.

Secondly after I installed all the ram (Channels A and B), I was unable to turn on XMP. If I attempted to use either Profile1 or Profile2, the computer would restart, attempt to boot up and then restart again in a cycle until I manually intervened and reset the cmos.

I realize this is a new board. Am I alone in my issues? I am considering returning the board but would like to hear if others are having a similar issue.

Can you boot with a single RAM stick in channel C or D? If not, it sounds like those slots may be bad. It happens with all manufacturers, but I would test it to confirm. Do it with stock or underclocks. If your RAM is running 2133 XMP, it should default to something like 1333 or 1800/1866 ... Try it there first and post back.
