Re, Face book, Intel soldering the CPU to the mobo.

Hi all.

Picked this up on Face book, seems that Intel may now be implementing soldered CPU's to the mobo, why?.

Next thing you know, all components will be fully integrated onto the mobo, thereby stopping O'clocker's & the like.

I wonder if we will have a choice of mobo, Standard, Multi media, Gamer etc?

Has any one seen this & what are your comments.

From the information I have this is correct. At least as far as the way Intel are planning for the future CPUs. As you say it will stop any upgrading of the processor without the motherboard and will also limit the amount of overclocking that will be possible.

I think that Haswell will be the last range of CPUs that will be built as we are used to and future silicon will be bonded to the motherboard permanently. Then I wonder if memory etc will also follow suit ? If so that would mean that nothing would be upgradeable and you would be stuck with your initial setup until you do a complete rebuild.

Apparently Apple are already going down this path with some of their systems so it is pretty safe to assume that others will follow suit. For one thing, it takes a major problem away for motherboard and other component manufacturers, that being users sticking any old bits into a system and wondering why they don't work! 

PC's, like tablets and laptops will just become another disposable item. They will suffer less compatibility problems, than they do now, as the main components will be decided upon by the manufacturers. And of course, those who like to O/C will be asked to pay a premium for a motherboard, CPU, RAM combi which will allow them to do this.

Further on this discussion how will this affect after market companies, those who make Video cards, CPU coolers, RAM, Sound Cards & the like?

Going to be a lot of job losses.

Another thought, would it be possible to have some sort of hard drive integrated into the mobo?

This could possibly destroy computering as we know it.

Hi Ben

I don't know what the actual grievance is between them but everybody seems to be backbiting and taking someone else to court at the moment. I suppose that all companies are feeling the pinch, financially and so look to other avenues for new cash.
