GA-EP35C-DS3R not POSTing
« on: December 06, 2012, 11:30:37 am »
The above mo/bo with Intel E8400 CPU will not POST. Power LED, HD LED and all phase LEDs lit.

Removed all HDs, IDE drives and graphics card, reseated RAM and tested PSU voltages (all good) and retested, still no POST nor error bleep.

Given all the LEDs which are lit is it possible to deduce if the mo/bo, CPU or PSU is dead?

Thanks

Does the board have the latest BIOS update?

I think so but as I didn't make a note of the BIOS version before the PC died I can't be sure.

Any idea what the phase LEDs on the mo/bo indicate?

Hi there,

if the mobo is running normally, the Phase LED's indicate the loading on the CPU.

Have you tried clearing CMOS to see if that helps?
Was the board running properly before or is it a new build from used parts?
Are there any bent pins in the CPU socket?
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Have cleared the BIOS and checked and reseated the CPU fan.
I have not removed the CPU to check for bent pins because nothing has happened to the PC to cause any bent pins.

The PC was running OK then when I switched it on the other day the symptoms described appeared. It was at this point that I removed everything from the mobo except RAM and CPU to see if I could at least get an error beep; symptoms still the same.

I have tried without RAM, still no POST.

I do not have spare parts to try substitution (which I would normally do) so I guess it case of replacement mobo & CPU  :(

it could still be the ram as a pc will not boot without ram.

does the board have a buzzer plugged in?  AFAIK they no longer have them built-in you have to plug one in which is included with most cases

It has some sort of 'sounder' because when working it did beep when it POSTed

IIRC my case has a speaker, at least the spk header is connected to something!

With no RAM installed I should still get an error beep...shouldn't I?

you should do.

how long do you wait when listening for a beep?  some boards can take upto a minute or more to give error beeps.

Without having other parts to test with it's difficult to know whats at fault but my gues is either ram or graphics card.

Graphics card not installed so I can rule that out.

I have waited a few minutes for it to POST and I'm not sure it's RAM because I don't get an error beep with no RAM installed.

why isn't the graphics installed?  I am right in saying the board does not have onboard graphics?

Graphics card not installed to remove it as a possible cause of the fault.

Start with the bare minimum to enable a POST attempt then work out the error beep codes which should indicate a missing graphics card.

no harm in trying the card again.  it could have been a loose connection or something not seated properly which could be fixed now - but how would you know
