GA-P67A-UD3-B3 UEFI BIOS u1a: first impressions!!!
« on: August 27, 2012, 05:15:03 pm »
Hi all and sorry for my poor english.  ;D
I could find no 3D, which speaks of my motherboard and the new UEFI BIOS U1A, so I decided to open this 3D to tell and share my thoughts.
At first glance it looks great and has solved several problems that i found in the old BIOS series:
1 - fixed a problem enabling the UrP, which prevented the computer to power on after a shutdown.
2 - fixed allocation problems of the BIOS PCI cards: I use both PCI slots provided by this motherboard, one for a SCSI controller and one for a SATA RAID, but previously they were not working properly and I could not boot from ODD connected to them.
3 - solved a problem of recognition of my gamepad (VID_04FC&PID_5001&REV_0100) when the computer is reactivated from hibernation, which forced me to reinstall every time the device.
4 - The POST is almost instantaneous and aesthetically everything is much more "cool". :-)

I found only a couple of minor issues:
1 - access to the UEFI BIOS with the DEL key usually stops it if I turn on the computer with my gamepad (VID_04FC&PID_5001&REV_0100) plugged into a USB port: I think it is due to the fact that the UEFI BIOS is unable to properly detect the device, but if I do not try to access the BIOS, the Windows 7 starts without any problems.
2 - The UEFI BIOS recognizes sometimes twice the same device, and makes it appear twice in the list of boot devices.
3 - UEFI BIOS sometimes uses a general entry to catalog a boot device, and it is not clear to which unit it refers.
4 - for these reasons my computer, which has many devices, exceeds the limit of 12 units of boot and when I press the F12 key to perform a selective boot, the UEFI BIOS does not show all of the devices from which to boot and it shows only the first 12, without offering the possibility of a scroll on those that are not visible on the screen.

Hi all,

I also recently upgraded from F9 to U1a. And wow it certainly looks better. Still, I find using keyboard to jump around the menus quicker and more comfy. As notted by Gulliver_69 the board now boots way faster (especially with a quick SSD), takes only a few seconds. Hey, who needs hibernation now?

It's obvious the first iteration of UEFI bios for this board has a lot of things to correct. Mainly, no GB software (such as Easy Tune, Touch Bios, etc) will work. Heck, it won't even install as it says "board is no GB" or "board does not support it". Only @BIOS actually works. I especially miss ET6 - a great tool for monitoring temp and voltages and RPM... I run my CPU undervolted and it helped me greatly. Sadly, other software like AIDA64 and CPU-Z seem to post wrong voltages now. (Actually, CPU-Z never posteg proper voltages, but AIDA did). CoreTemp now reports wrong CPU clock if multiplier is set to over 31 (def for I5 2400).

It's only 2 days I've had it so probably more issues will pop up. Naturally, I hope we'll get an improved version soon.

Also, fan speeds (PWM CPU fan to be exact) are not reported, neither in bios, nor in any monitoring software. The CPU fan speed selection is available but doesn't seem to work.

2 - The UEFI BIOS recognizes sometimes twice the same device, and makes it appear twice in the list of boot devices.

I suspect that is considered a "feature" of UEFI as the same device might be bootable with more than one method. Prior to EFI booting, pc disk devices used MBR booting and so a hard disk was one boot device that could be booted using the MBR.

But in a UEFI system with Legacy (MBR) boot support, it might be possible to boot the same device from code on the MBR or from the EFI system partition. So each device that is discovered at boot time is listed as both a UEFI bootable device and a "legacy" device using MBR booting.

So with my Z77 system, while I can usually boot from DVD, SSD or a WD hard disk, these are listed as about 5 different boot devices (2 each for the SSD and WD and one for the DVD).

How did you guys update to this latest UEFI bios?
I have tried but get a bios id check error when using Q-flash.
I want to upgrade so that I can then install my new ssd with gpt format and install windows  7 there as my primary boot drive.
Any help appreciated.

(When updating from legacy to UEFI, use only the utility attached to your BIOS file):
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3765#bios

It's mean you should use only bootable USB (HD) with FLASHEFI included with BIOS U1a.

Sidewalk - as far as I checked and confirmed with my mobo and U1a, the USB 3.0 socket won't work :( I had to go back to F9 to have them operating. But! Just today a new bios - U1b - has been released. Anyone want to try it? I'm awfully busy now, and can't really risk losing too much time playing with it, but you guys go ahead and report back if you find that it's improved over U1a.
Also, to go back to F9 you'd have to use "efi2awd" along with F9 bios loaded onto a bootable USB stick. The complete instructions are found somewhere heer, just look for them, it's an easy process.

Well upgraded u1a BIOS via BOOTABLE USB and now when I try and power on I just get a black screen, not post, no boot.. NOTHING!

The BIOS update seemed to go without a hitch, when it finished it told be to reboot which I did, now just a black screen! The fans come on and the keyboard lights up etc but there is no output to the display.

Are any of you still using this motherboard?
I am, and am considering updating to the latest UEFI
I read somewhere about u1b being released, but it's not on the regular download site.
