[GA-Z77P-D3] DDR3 detection, slow boot, BIOS incomplete?
« on: December 08, 2012, 12:07:03 pm »
Hi

Something is wrong with my updated PC

- MB Gigabyte GA-Z77P-D3, BIOS version F8e (same problem with earlier version)
- Intel i3 3220
- DDR3 Kingston PC3-12800 1600 MHz - CAS 9 - Hyper X Genesis - KHX1600C9D3K2/8 (2 x 4 Go)
- SSD Samung 470 on SATA 0
- DD WD 2 TB on SATA 1
- DVD on SATA 3
- DD WD 250 Go IDE with card > SATA, ont SATA 4
- MSI  Radeon HD 7770 with latest drivers buggy on W8 64 bits)
- WiFi Ralink RT2500

AHCI activated

Boot : for the first 5 seconds : CPU and case fans go to full speed. Back to idle after.

Slow boott whatever I choose in the BIOS (normal, fast or ultra), w or w/o logo. Boot was way faster with my old PC (Phenon 9950, 4 GB DDR2...)

Nothing shown during the boot sequence (except the American Megatrends logo). If the Gigabyte logo is on, it stays frozen for 15 s.

My DDR3 runs at 1333 MHz only, impossible to find a way to set it correctly.

Screen captures :

THANKS

here is a video : http://youtu.be/MT-4AIRQ6Bw

http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KHX1600C9D3K2_8G.pdf

Kingston's KHX1600C9D3K2/8G is a kit of two 512M x 64-bit (4GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM), 2Rx8 memory modules, based on sixteen 256M x 8-bit FBGA components per module. Total kit capacity is 8GB. Each module kit has been tested to run at DDR3-1600 at a low latency timing of 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V. The SPD's are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1333 timing of 9-9-9. This 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers. The JEDEC electrical and mechanical specifications are as follows

The thing is that I can't modify the voltage

And the slow boot remains anyway, with the full fans speed  :(

Try using XMP programming in the BIOS. This will automatically select the factory programmed specifications of the ram. It worked out great for me.

you can set your memory in bios setting\MIT.
if your memory support XMP, you can find XMP option to enable.
if not, you can adjust your system memory multipiler to run 1600.

Nothing shown during the boot sequence
-->there is no boot sequence in post screen. you need to go to bios setting\bios features\ boot option #1 to set your OS hdd as first boot.

Thanks for your help!

The thing is that I don't have a XMP option in the BIOS. And I can't modify any clock multiplier or voltage.

Boot option is already set to my SSD, there is nothing else left. If I don't enter the BIOS setup, I go straight to Windows. (after a while, of course)

I will take snapshots of my BIOS.

To access XMP programming in the BIOS go to M.I.T. --> ADVANCED MEMORY SETTINGS then enable Extreme Memory Profile. Check page 38/39 of the manual. Hope this helps.

Ok, thanks I can change the settings to "expert", but I can't modify anything very interesting. I will check the manual.

Here are the snapshots of my BIOS screens.

I can't see what I'm doing wrong.

Fans at high revs, no visible peripherals detection during the boot, and it takes ages to start !!!

As far as I know from what I've read the i3 processors do support XMP memory. I believe this is the memory you have
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7104116
It does show that it is XMP ready so you should be seeing that option in the BIOS. Would be nice to get an actual gigabyte mod on here to confirm!!

Thanks a lot fosser2

I'm new to these features. I thought that increasing the memory voltage to 1.65 V would do the job, but it looks like it has something to do with the i3 processor. That's why I can't modify any parameters.

Anyway, this would be perfect if I could get my DDR3 to run at 1600 MHz as advertised, but my main problems remain :

- fans speed at power on
- peripherals not shown during boot
- slow boot

Take a look through this thread
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,10284.0.html
Might have something in it...

EDIT: the fan speed at power on is normal. If you have actual MB controlled fans they actually boost on post to clear dust out of the case (or thats what i've heard). This boost is normal and cannot be disabled as far as I know. What peripherals are you missing during boot?

from your picutre, you didn't not adust system memory multiplier.
MIT\advanced frequency settings\ system memory multiplier and you will see it is auto and run as 1333.
please select it to 16.00.
no need to adjust the performance enhance.

Why is XMP profile not showing up in his bios. He should not have to manually set ram timings even though the option is available.

if his memory doesn't support XMP, it will not have XMP option.

I've found that the 3D BIOS offers more options than the advanced tab !  :o

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=FBE6A48ACDC7307F!217&authkey=!AEB2ojy4HrZqwCM

But no XMP option even if I can modify the voltage and speed settings!

Is there a way to reset the BIOS settings? I've tried "load optimized settings", but it still keeps some of my modifications?
