Gigabyte 5870 availability
« on: October 06, 2009, 12:51:42 pm »
I've recently bought a P55-UD4 motherboard and need to update my aging 7800GT.

I've been eying up the Gigabyte 5870 card (GV-R587D5-1GD-B) but nowhere seems to have them in stock, or even coming in.
From news, Dell appears to have bought a majority of the first crop of chips from ATI.

Can anyone let me know what the general availability of the cards is, or when you'd expect a decent supply to become available.

Most retailers online now have short stock of some brands, but as ATi probably pushed the launch out earlier and Dell buying a big proportion of the stock there are less around. I would guess a week or two before every brand is in stock. Should be a huge upgrade!

I've been keeping my eye on a couple of places - found OverclockersUK and Novatech that had it listed.

Ordered mine from Novatech this afternoon:
 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Graphics-ATI/ATIHD5800Series/Gigabyte/GV-R587D5-1GD-B.html

Amusingly, it appears that OverclockersUK have upped their price when they got stock (from 298.99GBP to 309.99GBP) and Novatech dropped theirs (was 321.99GBP, in stock at 298.99GBP)

Should be delivered to work tomorrow so I can play with it tomorrow night.

It arrived this morning while I was at a meeting.
Very happy and now can't wait to get get home and try it out.

Crysis on max settings was running at 5PS last night (1280x1024 no AA) - want to see what this card will do

Ha! Yes, it as laughable.
I only did it as a test just to get the numbers - then I tried playing it for a couple of minutes of it feeling like a slideshow and being unable to pick people off at distance as the small breathing nudges you get were totally unable to be accounted for.

Sometimes you just have to laugh =)

1280x1024???
I can max out crysis 1920x1200 8xAA Very high on my GTX295 with playable frames (30fps ~)

Waiting for a dual gpu card and nvidia's lineup before upgrading, cannot wait tbh!
Might even let them drink a little liquid :D

Aye - the main problem being that if I have a gfx card that has trouble at 1280x1024, there's no point in getting a nice monitor as it'll die at the higher resolution.

I can't upgrade it all at once, so I'd rather go for the card first so it'll be able to handle higher resolution without a problem.

Crysis running on Very High was at 45+ fps so I'm happy with that - now I can look at getting a nice 24"+ monitor to start giving it some proper real estate to work with.
