HDD's in BIOS, SATA mobo slots

HDD's in BIOS, SATA mobo slots
« on: January 22, 2010, 11:14:17 am »
Hello guys. I have a small problem, and i hope you can help me out.
I have 2 HDD's , they are WD 6400 AAKS,both.
Everytime when i install Windows ( XP /7/Vista) something is not ok. I mean:i format de HDD,i make the partitions.
I do the first HDD like that : C and D,and i leave the second HDD as E partition, full.
After Windows is installed,in My Computer i have the following : C / E / D
C and D are 1 HDD,and E is the other one. Why is the order in My Computer, like that ?
There is no RAID,at all. I have it now in BIOS,the setting " SATA port 0-3 native mode" Should i put " LEGACY MODE" ??!!
On IDE CHANNEL 0 Master is the 1 HDD ( C and D )
On IDE CHANNEL 1 Master is the second HDD ( E )
DVD RW is IDE CHANNEL 1 SLAVE.
Do i have to change the order in motherboard SATA slots, for HDD's and DVD RW ???
I attache here 2 printscreens. Please,if you have any ideas, help me. Cheers.

Hi,
Windows has it's own drive naming setup, :P
I always disconnect all drives except the one I want to install too,
Then partition drive after install and name it, install another hdd and partition again
There are other more techie type ways to do it, but maybe i'm to old to learn or have had to figure it out in my logical way,
If you intend to install 3 O/S shown, install the oldest O/S first, ie,. XP, Vista, Win 7,
From what I know you have to give up your XP licence to install win 7, And then you can download XP and
Run it in virtualisation mode inside win 7, Provided your CPU supports it
You can rename drives, except C, in disc manager
Cheers

I don't wanna install 2 or 3 OS.
All i have / need  is Windows XP,and i'm happy with it.
But i just wonder about the way XP manages the letter after i install OS.
Like i said ,in My Computer is : C / E / D
I tried like you said,too.
So,i plugged out 1 hdd,and i installed only with 1 hdd plugged in.
I made C un D. After it was done,i plugged in the other HDD.But ..surprise,after i plugged that in again,there was the same way : C / E / D
Really,i'm not sure, but i presume, there is something about the way i connect the SATA cables on my mobo.

Hi,
Not thinking you wanted to install 3 O/S, just that you mentioned them in your post,
Go Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools to find it, you can change any EXCEPT the OS drive, simply change the letter of the drive closest to the bottom, eg take the D drive that you want to replace and give it a higher drive letter such as H or so, that will clear the way to get the drive you want to be the D drive where it should be, repeat for each drive you want to edit, just remember do NOT edit the OS drive letter or you will be forced to reinstall more than likely, when I first played with that I had found out the hard way lol.
You could also use a partition software to rename your partitions
Hope this helps

Hi,

You're not alone. Windows normally manages to mix up my 4 partitions and 2 DVD drives in a different order each time I re-format. As I just do as Pottypete suggests and change them via Administrative Tools. It's part of my usual re-install routine.

Yes,i know that. But when i use only one single HDD and make 3 / 4 / 5 partitions, everything runs okay.
I thought it's something about SATA cables or BIOS settings, but you're right. Windows ....
Thanks,guys.
