GA-X79-UP4 rev 1.1 32GB installed, 16 GB available
« on: April 13, 2014, 06:49:09 pm »
i have installed 32 GB of ram, in bios, MIT reports 32 GB, but bios system info reports 16 gb (as does windows)
board is GA-X79-UP4 rev 1.1 bios version F5
memory 4x8gb corsair ddr3 1600 vengeance pro. i realize the mem is not listed on the qvl but i need low height ram to clear the cpu cooler and the guys at microcenter said this ram would be compatible.

i installed in slots per the manual for 4 sticks.
DDR3_4
DDR3_2
DDR3_1
DDR3_3
i have installed all in one bank as well, same issue. any thoughts?

i just realized that this is dual channel memory and the board supports triple or four channel. i surmise this is the issue?

Memory is memory four stick of the same memory should work. Just try slot 1 & 2. If you still only show one stick than the slots on one side aren't working.

I had two 2011 do that. You have to test the slots and each memory stick.

in bios, one screen show 32GB, the other shows 16GB. also when u use DIM viewer it states that only 2 slots have sticks in them. does this sound familiar?

stupid ques but which is slot 1 and slot two?

Slots 1,3,5, & 7 are on side of the CPU and slots 2,4,6, & 8 are on the other side. So slot 1 is on one side and slot 2 is on the other side.

ok gotcha.
I put a new set of 4 8GB sticks in, same issue, only 16gb so its not the memory.
did some testing using two 8 gb sticks. I followed the memory configuration for 2 sticks (triple channel) in the user manual

Slot 1&2 would not boot. does this mean the board is bad? would seem so, yes?
1&3 reported 8 gb as did the others noted in the table.

1. So what you are saying is with memory in slot 1 & 2 it would not boot right.

2. If you put memory 1 & 3 it tell you only have 8gb total right.

3. if you put memory in 1 3 & 4 what is the total memory? If it 16gb than yes the 1 & 2 slot are not ready the memory.

The board is yes is bad both it can be fix. I would bring it back to Micro Center and get another one.

These board when they are working right they will take any brand of memory. I have done a lot of testing with both of my x79-UP4 & x79-UD3 with memory.

Did you read what etavares had found a bent pin in CPU socket. You might have the same problem.

answer to your questions.

1. correct, would not boot with 8 gb in slot 1 and 8 gb in slot 2

2. correct. 8 gb in slot 1, 8 gb in slot 3, boots but only 16 gb reported

3. did not test 3 and 4.

i did see what etavares said but have not checked mine. i will look at it when i remove it.

this is why i told myself i would never build another computer. the money saved does not compensate for all the lost time due to faulty components.

thanks for all your help.

I have said in the past and I say it again. You always cross your fingers every time you build a new computer.
