AM3+ FX-8120 - Dead CPU?
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:30:05 pm »
Trying to figure out if there's any other paths I should be pursuing b4 deciding the CPU I bought is dead on arrival...

GA-990FXA-UD5 mobo with AM3+ FX-8120 CPU.  After initial install of cpu and powerup, I got nothing!  No POST screens, no display of anything.

Some browsing indicated it was because I needed to updatethe BIOS on the mobo.  So, I put an older AMD Sempron chip in, which allowed me to boot and get to POST screen - where I flashed to the F11 rev of the BIOS.

Put the FX-8120 back in and powered up... Still nothing.

Is it time to call AMD or are there any other thigns I should be checking/trying?

Thanks.

clear the cmos take the battery out or use the jumpers make sure to unplug power from tower before you do. See if that works had the same problem clearing cmos did help but i ended up send mb in for repair. Had ram problems also so i played it safe only 2 ram dimms worked. post back results for more help if still needed if not needed post back so others can get help from your post.

When you flashed bios did you check the box clear DMI?

Thanks for that approach - I can't wait to get home to try it!  Just to clarify - are you saying to clear cmos b4 flashing the bios again, or just to do it before trying to power up with the FX-8120 in?  I'll be sure to report back!

JUST CLEAR IT BUT DONT FLASH AGAIN SOMETIMES IF YOU DONT CHECK DMI IT WILL SAVE VETTINGS FROM LAST CPU AND NOT ALLOW TO START JUST CLEAR IT FIRST.

Rats!  :-\  No change from clearing CMOS...  Like i mentioned, everything works fine with an old AMD Sempron CPU in there (fine, of course, being a very relative term), so I'm inclined to believe it's not a mobo issue.  I guess it's time to look into AMDs replacement policy.  Thanks for the help - and if you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

You could try clearing the cmos again -take out the battery for a while to make sure it has been cleared.

Is your power supply adequate? A weak supply might be enough for the sempron, but not for the FX.

Thanks for suggestions...  I tried clearing CMOS several times before replying before.  The power supply is ok - 700 watt OCZ...
