GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev 3.0 won't post
« on: February 14, 2013, 01:55:02 am »
Hello there,

I am building new PC for a friend, and after putting everything together, when I power on the PC, it hangs on the mobo logo and the keyboard becomes unresponsive. I can't get to the BIOS nor enter the QFlash or etc..

I did:

  • Taking out the CMOS battery for an hour and sometimes for few hours
  • Taking the mobo out and try with only CPU, RAM, GPU and sometimes the HDD/SSD. Nothing else attached.
  • Tried every possible combination of RAM modules/slots, tried different RAMs (corsair) no go.
  • Tried new mobo (The original ASUS I had then RMA'd it for this one) Same issues, so the mobo is fine?
  • Different PS2 and USB keyboards.

The only thing I am left to think of, is either the CPU or the PSU? Unfortunately, I don't have or know anyone with AM3+ compatible CPU to try and even the local store we have here (I think it's the only one in my city) don't even have AM3+ CPUs around for troubleshooting :O

I am not sure if I missed anything else, what do you guys think?  ???

Specs:

  • Mobo:    GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev 3.0
  • CPU:      AMD FX-8120 Zambezi
  • RAM(s): G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133
  • GPU:      eVGA GeForce 680 GTX SC Edition
  • PSU:      Corsair HX Series HX750 750W 80 Plus Gold Certified
  • SSD:      OCZ Vertex 3 120G SATA III
  • HDD:     WD Black 1TB

Thanks a lot guys,

Hi there,

not really sure what is causing this but have you tried or could you test with a lower spec'd GPU?

As far as the RAM goes, this should default to 1333MHz (JDEC standard) and would have to be manually set for timings, voltage etc once you can get into BIOS. The fact that you state that you have also tried to use Corsair modules would suggest that it isn't a RAM issue.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

absic, I replaced the GPU with an old 8800 GTX and it worked!

Why this is happening? I tried the 680 GTX on another PC for 2 days and it ran flawlessly, could it be the PSU ?

Should I try maybe to flash the newer BIOS?

Thank you for all the help
