ga-z77 d3h with zotac 650Ti stuck on boot
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:10:55 pm »
hello, i just completed new pc from fresh components:
MOBO: GIGABYTE Z77-D3H
CPU: Intel Core i5-3470
MEM: corsair 8GB KIT DDR3 1600MHz CL9 XMS3
PSU: Corsair CX500
GFX: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB
after connecting all componets (+ feeding gfx card with 6pin extra power) computer starts but freezes on bios page asking for del/f11/f9, but keyboard doesn't react (only for ctrl-alt-del)
tried to connect gfx card to x4 slot with same result
after unplug of gfx card and connecting onboard intel gfx computer boots normally
i had tried inserting gfx card into other pc and it worked ok
can anybody suggest further steps ?
many thanks for any help

update #1: tried plug in old borrowed gfx asus 9600gt and it works ok. so it seems to me for some zotac gtx650ti conflict and pci-e + extra 6pin power are working ok

i also noticed that connecting display cable to onboard dvi while zotac gfx is inserted (but not connected to monitor) leads to blank display..

tried to setup primary card to peg, nothing changes, zotac is still freezing all on initial screen (american megatrends or gb logo)

Although there is a possible issue with BIOS and the GPU it could just as easily be a power draw issue as you are probably under powered with a 500 Watt PSU.

Zotac recommend a minimum 450 Watt psu for your GPU

Gigabyte recommend at least 500 Watts

To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high
power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide
the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system.

Can you try a more powerful PSU to eliminate that as the cause?
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

sorry, but i don't expect that my components can consume such amount of power (at boot time, not during heavy load in 3d game)
here are some real power consumption values of overclocked 650ti with much power thirsty cpu: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6359/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-650-ti-review/19  under heavy load

GTX650 may have uefi bios.
you may need to flash to latest bios to solve the problem.

ysw> do you mean that mobo bios F16 should be replaced with F18 and it will solve problem ? or do you recommend update bios in gfx card ?

success: after acquiring another zotac as replacement i found that situation is the same - stuck on boot screen.
so i tried final step - update bios from F16 to F18 and after restart zotac gtx650ti card is recognized and pc is now booting ok
