Memory and power supply questions..
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:43:52 am »
ok so my current computer is dual core with 2gb ram and a nvidia 9500gt graphics card... i cant run planet side 2 on this so i ordered a gigabyte motherboard GA-78LMT-S2P with a 6 core amd phenom 2.. in users manual for the motherboard it also says rev.5101 12me-78lmt2p-5101r i dont know if thats needed.. anyhow i have not installed this yet as i still have to buy memory and maybe a new power supply.. from what i have gathered this board can support 16gb of ram 8x2 sticks ddr3 unbuffered.. whats unclear to me is mhz 1600? 1333? and so on.. im also assuming it cant be dual channel..

bottom line is im hoping with the information i have provided somone can tell me exactly what 8x2 16gb will work with this system.. maybe give me a link to the exact part on tigerdirect or newegg..

finally im worried i may not have the power.. what would the recommended power supply be with what i have combined with the ram you are saying..

thank you for reading my wall of text and dot dots

id like to add i looked at the pdf of your recommended memory or whatever and none are 8gb sticks but thats what brought me here... if the board supports 16gb i need to know what i can trust to work in it with just 2 ram slots meaning i need 8x2...

The CPU has an integrated memory controller. The X6 Phenom 2 IMC should take 1600Mhz with 2 sticks of ram.

You have ordered an old chipset based motherboard that is not well fitted for a six core.
What six core CPU are we talking about exactly?

Depending on this and on the future video card upgrades i can tell you a PSU that should work.

AMD PHENOM II X6 1045T THUBAN 2.7GHZ AM3 CPU

i figured the two worked ok together considering i bought it as a bundle on tiger direct lol.. but my main goal is to find 8x2gb ram that will work with this i dont want to order somthing assuming it will and it doesnt.. there recommendeds do not help at all..

im also not to worried about pwer supply because i think im gonna get this one wich is more than i should ever need lol

my main concern is finding the 8x2 ram that will for sure work with the mother board

With the 1045T I would stick to DDR3 RAM of 1600MHz or less. I tend to use Corsair modules in all of my builds and have not encountered any problems with the Vengeance modules such as these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7525996&CatId=4534

Don't worry too much if they don't appear on the QVL for the motherboard as Gigabyte, along with other manufacturers, can't test all modules available.

You may find that the RAM is downclocked automatically to 1300MHz this is normal and the RAM should work perfectly although the modules I have linked to are 1600MHz. This is because, technically, the Phenom CPU's only have a memory controller rated at this speed (1333MHz) and, if it is the same for you in the USA as it is here in the UK, then 1600MHz is actually cheaper than 1333 MHz modules! The difference in speed, between the RAM is not noticeable in day-to-day use and I wouldn't bother trying to run it at 1600MHz as the risks outweigh the advantages of doing so, although with overclocking you should be able to do so.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Yes the Corsairs are ok .I wouldn t worry about the lack of support in the memory supported list
Practically i have never found the exact RAM manufacturers put in those lists :)

On the other hand i can t recommend you the usage of a motherboard like the one the reseller is promoting ,with a six core CPU.
Mainly because the chipset is old ,the power stage has no cooling and you won t have SATA 3 support neither the option of USB 3.0.
SATA 3 support is on the AMD 8xx chipset family and up .

In theory the X6 CPU has the ability to run 1600Mhz with it s IMC ,my PII X4 975 is running right now at 1600Mhz with some Geil RAM .
Keep in mind the X4 has a little crappier IMC than the X6 in spite of being in the same Phenom 2 family (X6 has a newer silicon revision).

Overall the system you are building ,needs no more than some 500W (more than 36Ampers on the 12V rail continuous) quality power supply .If you intend a better video card then maybe something like a Corsair 600W/650W with around 50 Amps could be a little more suited ,just to get the PSU loaded where it gives the best power efficiency and the lowest noise and heat.

For gaming though - I am not familiar with Planet Siide2 though -  a X4 CPU should be more suited ,higher clock rates per core.
Unfortunately most of the games and software are not optimized for six cores yet ,even now.
