78LMT-USB3 12V connector

Hi,

I've just purchased a GA-78LMT-USB3 760G without realising that it has an 8-pin ATX12V socket.

My PSU (a Tesla 650W) only has a 4 pin 12V connector.

Can I simply plug this into one side of the 8-pin socket?

If not, would it be safe to use a 4-pin to 8-pin adaptor cable or should I look for a new PSU with an 8-pin connector?

You might get away with just plugging the 4 pin adaptor in to the motherboard but you may not get enough power to give the system stability. It will depend on the other hardware you are using.

Using an 8 pin adaptor is perfectly OK, I have had to do this on more than one occasion ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/8-pin-12v-to-4-pin-power-cable-99521 ) and I have found this to do the job adequately.

Tried booting up with just the 4pin connector attached, no graphics card or PCI cards. Didn't even get a Post screen. No beep codes either.

Guess, I'll wait until I get the 4-pin to 8-pin adapter and try again.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions I think the board's going back to the supplier.

I found a listing for a PSU (a Tesla 650W) with only a 4 pin ATX +12 volt power cable going for £15.00.
This is not the high quality Fractal Design Tesla 650W. It looks like a cheap generic model that I would think is the most likely problem.
I would suggest trying a different power supply.

You are using such adapter for nothing if the power supply can t deliver the amps.
Get a Corsair CX 430W ,a Chieftec/Sirtec 500W+ ,the new entry level Enermax or some other well known/decent manufacturer of PSU-s ,that features a 4+4 CPU pin, to make sure you are using the right power supply and it s not the culprit.

You need a TRUE 400W power supply (~ 30Ampers on the 12V rails combined) and not some crap 650W firecracker.If the sticker on the PSU would deliver the power it would be such an easy job to get the right power supply.
