ADVICE NEEDED New build first intel in 10 years
« on: May 08, 2013, 04:15:13 am »
As the topic states i have not built an intel rig in at least 10 years and am looking to build one. Below is motherboard and cpu i want. Am looking for any advice from others on this. Will i need to update bios, is this right selection for a gameing rig?.  Pairing it with SSD and probably a 6970 sapphire. What are other getting for overclocks and  is it harder to OC than a black edition amd chip. Pros and cons please and be honest.  I dont want to spend alot and just the MB and CPU is a bit over 500.
Any troubles with this combo if anyone is running it. I want to thank each person that answers any info is not lost on me i do my research and i trust the posters here to not lead me wrong. Alot of smart people in here.

Hi Autotech,

I can't say if the mobo/cpu combination you are going for will work OK as I don't have those components but, having switched from AMD to Intel, sometime ago (I'm now running the GA-Z77X-UP5 TH and i5-2500k) I can say that the difference between the two platforms is very noticeable. Even without O/C'ing the CPU the Intel system is faster than my old AMD rig (1090T CPU & GA-990FXA-UD5) in every way.

O/C'ing with Intel i5 & i7 chips is a little bit different to AMD but there are enough similarities for it not to be too daunting. There are some useful guides on this subject here and on other forums which can point you in the right direction. From my research it would seem that the Ivybridge processors do not overclock as well as the Sandybridge chips and I have managed to get to 5.0GHz with my 2500k when playing around  with it in the early days.

The biggest issue I initially came across, believe it or not, was with all the different Intel drivers and trying to work out exactly what was needed. With AMD there is usually one driver package for motherboard, chipset & CPU, but with Intel there are usually a couple that are required.

Good luck with your new build.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Thank you for the reply absic i have been reading and it doesnt seem much different than what it used to be. I learned on intel but wasnt sure of the changes they have made. Switched in the old sockett 939 days to amd and have been happy since.

I cant find a sandybridge i want in the i5's Is sorta why i went with the i7 and it supports hyper threading, which isnt a have to have but i have been on auto notify for awhile on it.

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K.

Am going to use some old DDR3 1600 i have laying around 4 sticks at 2 gig each. Plan on using my own case and PSU time to retire my 1090t still runs great dont get me wrong but it has been so long since last processor upgrade and i need to do some video editing and dont want to take all night doing it and this just isnt as fast as i think i can make one.

For video editing/transcoding maybe x79 i7-3930k might be a better option if you want to do this in a hurry,2 extra cores will make a difference.

hi, i have both a 3820 (2011 ) and a 3770k (1155), my last amd product was an fx-57 so i cant really give a comparison compared to amd :(
i can say this

the ud5 u are looking at is great and absorbs heat very well (case ambient), u can ofc save a few dollars now and get the ud3 model and get the bt4.0 add in card later for a bit cheaper cost overall, i cannot honestly tell the difference between the two processors in terms of rendering times or performance (a few seconds/gig?) when converting one format to another. Giga's bios is extremely easy to the point of being idiot proof.

i can say this, the 3770 runs hotter overall for the same OC's so make sure u are using high static pressures for the intakes and high cf/m fans for exhausts.

without knowing exactly which concerns you are trying to address, ill leave it at 500$ is fine for the ud5/3770 combo you are choosing are just fine for music (soundforge/qbase) and visuals ( cs6/elements) as for gaming, a 3570/d3h with a decent gpu and 8 gigs of ram will play almost anything
