GA-73PVM-S2H with ATI 5450 PCIE Card. Problem!!
« on: February 28, 2011, 06:29:01 pm »
Hi,

I recently bought a new gfx card for better decoding of h.264 (XFX ATI 5450).

But when I install the card the MB will not POST. Long beeps, sounding as a floppydrive searching for a floppy.
In bios I have the options: "Enabled onboard gpu if no External gpu present" and Init display : PCIE.

If I hold the DELETE button during post a LOOONG time or spam the DELETE button for a LOOONG time it will boot the ATI card. But this is nothing I can do EVERY startup, especially not on a HTPC. (which my wife should also be able to start).

I've tried the card in my stationary rig, and it boots without any problems, which runs on a P35-DS3.

I've flashed the F09 bios ot the GA-73PVM-S2H, which didn't help at all. I got a 400W NorthQ and for this small setup it shouldn't be any problems, and since I get it to boot if I hammer the Delete button.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get the card running?!

Thanks..

full specs:

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

How many long beeps does it emit before starting over again ?

In the BIOS is there an option for PEG for the graphics rather than PCIE ?

Hi,

Thanks!

I ment the PEG option, just didn't remember exactly what it was called when I wrote the text, but since it stands for PCIE I wrote that.

When it "beep" it feels like it never "start over" just a long sound like a hogging floppydrive trying to read a bad disk and then pause for a sec or two, then this sound again. I'll put in the card again and try to count if I can hear any smaller instances of sound in that "hogging" sound, but it sounded really bad.

Continuous long beeps normally means that the graphics card either isn't seated properly or is faulty.

The same "beep" that is there at a normal startup, just pauses for 1.5sec and comes again, over and over.. (sounds like a floppy to me ;) )

The Card works on my other computer with a GA-P35-DS3 and it is seated properly. And how come I get picture if I spam delete/hold it for a long time? I'm going to try with another older pci-e card tomorrow and see what happens. If that is not working I guess the PCI-E slot is faulty or maybe the board just is incompatible with this card? Could that be the case? :(

Do anyone know how long warranty is there on a Gigabyte MB's?

The warranty on most Gigabyte motherboards is three years from the date of manufacture.

If the beep is only a short one repeated then it means power error.

Try clearing the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Opimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Hi,

I just found another newer bios. F9E, only F9C were availible on the localized site. Going to try with this one, if that wont work I'll try with my other Tagan 480W PSU which I've used even to power my 470GTX for awhile on my other computer. If that still dont work its time to try the old Gigabyte 7800gt in the slot.

I'll get back to you.

Sometimes swapping components out is the easiest way to find the problem. Let us know how you get on.  ;)

When I tried with my Tagan 480W it booted (only connected the mb), it took like 6-7 seconds to show POST screen but it booted :) So, I replaced the NorthQ psu with my Tagan. And got the same problem again. What was different, yesterday I've tried without any satadrives connected with same problems, but one thing has always been connected.. the DVD-RW reader/writer. Unplugged the power to it and wollla, it booted.

I've never experienced a conflict between a Gfx card in a pci-e slot and a ide DVD-rw reader/writer before. Even though I was around back in the days when you allocated adresspace with jumpers on the boards ;)

So I changed the PSU for no reason but it helped me find the problem. Now I run 1080p video dxva accelerated with 10% cpu load, yay :)

Thanks Dark Mantis for the tips and idea's. Appriciate the support!!

You are very welcome and I am really happy that you managed to find the cause of the problem in the end. These PATA drives do cause some headaches now. ;)
