GA-990FXA-UD3 won't let me change any settings
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:01:08 pm »
Hello,

I am brand new to these forums as I have never owned a Gigabyte product before. Yesterday I assembled a system with these components:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz x8
MB: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
BIOS VERSION: FB
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB 1866Mhz
GPU: EVGA GTX470
PSU: ENERMAX NAXN 650W
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

Today I am trying to tinker with it, but am having some problems. BIOS will not let me change any settings. Everything just says "Auto." I turned off the CPB feature and set core unlocking to Enabled, but I still can't do anything. My memory is only showing a speed of 1333, which I'd like to push to full 1866. I'd also like to up my clock on the CPU, and experiment a bit. What do I need to do to be able to set the values manually?

I do not know what "rev" I have. I downloaded the latest BIOS from the site and I believe I downloaded the 3.0.

Thanks!

If you go to the motherboard product support page and select the photo that looks down on the motherboard. The zoom feature clearly shows the revision number printed in the corner followed by the wording "Designed in Taipei".

To set memory to 1866MHz:

Select the MB Intelligent Tweaker Menu in BIOS:
Go to the Set Memory Clock setting and change it from Auto to Manual.
Set Memory Clock to X9.33
Next, go to the DDR3 Timing Items setting and change it from Auto to Manual.
Set 1T/2T Command Timing to 2T
Set CAS# latency to 10
Set RAS to CAS R/W Delay to 11
Set Row Precharge Time to 10
Set Minimum RAS Active Time to 30

These timings are for Model F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL
Timing 10-11-10-30

If you use four modules instead of two, you may need to use 1600MHz speed.
DCT's Mode should be set to Unganged.

The Dram Voltage may be okay if left on Auto.

Don't try to change BIOS options without first downloading and reading the motherboard instruction manual.

I have the same motherboard and processor and I too cannot figure out to change anything in the bios. Everything is set to "auto" and for some reason cannot be changed...

if it's a rev 3 board:
there is an XMP option (ram section) - just disable it to enable manual override.

btw, the latest bios is FC for the v3 board

I have the Rev 1.1 version that is older. Reading the manual for Rev. 3.0, after the XMP setting there is a System Memory Multiplier (SPD) setting which is set to [Auto] which sets memory according to SPD data. Memory generally comes with conservative timing recommendations in the SPD, this is probably why you have memory stuck at 1333MHz. You don't want that set on [Auto]. The picture in the manual shows it at 6.67 which is for 1333MHz, so you would use:
8.00 for 1600MHz
9.33 for 1866MHz

Using XMP profile settings will probably change all necessary memory settings for you automatically. XMP profiles are [Disabled] by default.
If you want to set the System Memory Multiplier manually then be sure to set the DRAM Timings manually too (the first four numbers starting with CAS# Latency).
