GA-G41M-ES2H hdmi problems...
« on: February 11, 2010, 06:36:16 pm »
I just bought a nice new HD LCD TV (LG 47SL80).  When I plug my HTPC into the tv via the hdmi port (with no other cables connected), the TV goes through the connecting stage (so it knows somthign is connected) but then reverts to the "No Signal" screensaver.
If I use a DVI to HDMI adapter (using a DVI cable and no other cables connected to the PC) to plug the DVI output from the board into the same HDMI port on the TV, I do get signal but of course no HD sound (so I know the port on the TV works).
I have no extra cards in the machine, All video/audio I am using is onboard and I only want to use the onboard hdmi (if I can ever get it to work).
I have verified that the HDMI cable I have is a 1.3 cable.  But unfortunately I don't have any other HDMI devices that I can test it with.
If I plug the hdmi cable into the port on the board, both the VGA and DVI plugs on the board get disabled even if I have the bios set to always enable.
When I get a signal on the TV using the DVI port (and the HDMI adapter), windows tells me that the video device driver is not found.  I have tried installing the chipset driver from the Gigabyte support downloads for my board but there doesn't seem to be a video driver included.
I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit.
Shouldn't this just plug and play?  Am I doing something wrong?  I've reset the bios to default settings at this point (load optimized defaults) and I am asking for help.  What do I need to change/download/etc?  I just want to be able to plug the PC into the TV with the HDMI output and get a signal.  I don't have any other video or sound adapeters in the machine (all pci/pcie slots are empty).

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Hmm...

This http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/high_definition_multimedia_interface.cfm article says that HDMI supports a max of 120hz refresh rate.  The TV indicates it has 240hz refresh.  Is this the problem or does this not even play into it?

If it is the problem, what is the solution?

hmm....perhaps I was duped by a marketing gimmick...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core_2_Chipsets

indicates that this motherboard chipset doesn't actually support HD through the HDMI port...

"The difference between the GMA X4500 and the GMA X4500HD is that the GMA X4500HD is capable of "full 1080p high-definition video playback, including Blu-ray disc movies",[13] the GMA X4500 however does not have that capability.[14]"

The intel website confirms that the G41 express chipset has the GMA x4500 (not x4500HD)
http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/Chipsets/G41/G41-overview.htm
and doesn't specifically mention that it is capable of HD video (only HD audio).  Meanwhile, the intel website for the G45 chipset
http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/g45/g45-overview.htm
which has the X4500HD specifically states that it supports the HDMI video resolutions as well...

Good work Gigabyte...you duped me just fine
